I'm poor, but I try to give good reviews to games or advice for the developer to try to improve the game

I'm broke, and half the games I would have actually supported have either been abandoned, or the dev turns out to be a pos

I'll buy a finished game from a dev, but I can't justify supporting a game monthly in the hopes that the dev might one day finish it. Way too many games get abandoned or go through major changes that i might not like.

Exactly. Also, even a modest amount like $5/month will add up to quite the price tag when game development gets dragged out for years.

I try to, but for some devs the amount they ask is kind of insane...

Patreon devs are trash, of course, there are few exceptions, who deserves money, but majority of them are trash who delivers only unfinished and abandoned games. The only kind of devs which I would willingly support are those from DLsite, Japanese devs

Backed too many projects that ended up abandoned to do it again.

I'm sorry I haven't read the other replies YET, but I wanted to answer your question up front. There are several possible reasons but it boils down to:
  • I'm just curious. Most people just wanna see the product first. I sometimes just want to try the game first, given there are just so many games. Demo versions or standard versions work to lure me in.
  • Believe me, I've bought some games from itch.io, just the ones I really like to see. But after doing so, I realized It's not possible to hide these payments -- Whoever can see my bank account statements would know these payments, so it's actually really hard to pay subscribestar.adult OR patreon without the risk. I think this is the biggest one so far
  • Maybe I just don't like the dev and how they post announcements.
Anonymous payments in adult game distribution is an important one to tick

I find that most of the devs don't know how to spend the money given to them on the project properly. Either they're pocketing it or burning themselves out and there is no incentive to finish a project other than the potential of new patreons you'll get from starting a new project. I'd consider throwing 5-20$ on a game once its done or if that was the only time i'm paying for it (ie steam early access) but the model of paying someone to make a game hoping that it will eventually be complete is just silly when you can buy/play so many good games made in the past decade that I've missed.

Correct, they are pocketing it. This is the link to the game: https://lewdcorner.com/threads/lust-and-power-version-0-65-regular-lurking-hedgehog.2185/ This game is a remake of Dark Prince which was abandoned 7 years ago and Lust and Power came on 7 years ago too. It had updates for only 1 year to the peak which had the most content, afterwards, for whatever the fuck reason, the amount of content got reduced and no new content were developed in these 6 years after a year of constant updates.

And this is the amount of money dev is getting monthly:

The developers need to start starving once in a while to actually start working instead of pocketing money

I usually buy games from promising small time devs who actually need the support and avoid the big shots.

Got fed up of abandon projects and inflation got a reason on my money repartition choices

I would support more devs if they have something like a 1 time purchase or a purchase every release. But paying every month for like half a year for an update is just too annoying to deal with since they can just milk it instead of releasing actual update.

I try to support my favorite devs when I can, but there have been plenty of times where I had to cancel my payment due to life expenses

I don't like patreon or any other support platforms so I don't. If their game reach to steam I do buy them though. So kinda support I think.

I'd glady pay for the completed product, if said completed product would actually get made most of the time. Got burned one too many times with subscribing to devs that just cancel the game after radio silence for 4+ months

on the why not
1 you need a creditcard to get paypall ( atleast where i live) and i never needed a creditcard in 41 years, so not going to get one now
2 im crippled bec of a working axcident (note to others, don't try to get electrocuted by 10kv)., and no longer alowed/able to work,
so i don't have alot of money in most cases
