for me its real simple. burned too many times by devs that i have supported in the past. my faith in "ongoing" or "developing" projects is pretty much at a zero. i also do NOT preorder from mainstream stuff or "crowdfund" projects either. i support exactly TWO devs at the moment. and even that took forever for me to be ok with again.
i sympathize with you. i supported NLT for a while. they have a good track record. the market's just so dense that it's hard to figure out who will finish a game, who will finish it well, who will drag it out forever, etc.

plus, if i do buy it on itch or steam, i'm still going to have to go to another site to get the patch... and a free download link will be right there.

Same as many others, i've supported projects only for them to be changed drastically, cancelled or updates taking too long (aka milking a project). I've even stopped buying VNs on Steam due to devs screwing over their supporters on other platforms (Patreon, Itch, SS) in favor of the almighty Steam payday.

There's so many games I like that it's impossible to support them all. At some point if you want to play them all you end up not paying for most of them.

no money

Every so often I will support but the biggest issue is I find it a slap in the face when you go to support a creator only for them to sit there and collect money for 6-8 months then just ghost and abandon the game. I've stopped because of this.

Because I can't affort it :(

I've done it a few times with games I really like. There's been a few where I wanted to but I'm not interested in subscription models. If there's no option to just buy or support with a one time payment I'm much less likely to do it

Can not afford to support all dev each month. Hard to choose the few to pay regularly so what to do? Hard to mange 20 $1 subs

mainly because of no money

In rotating order of precedence depending on which way the wind blows:

Paranoia. I'm not comfortable with most of the methods of electronic donation. If my favorite devs set up a physical box somewhere I could drop a bill in, that's one thing. The electronic paper trail left behind with most donations methods make me unhappy.

Screw Subscriptions. Period. I even stopped supporting certain charities (when money is available) when they shifted to the "for just 19.99 a month we'll stop feeding the orphan crushing machine" model.

Lack of disposable income. My 9-5 paycheck is for debt service. And my side hustles are inconsistent.

im a poor wanker and prefer to fill my stomach.

I only buy full games DRM-free.
Also, almost all Western VNs aren't exactly good. How can you ask for money, when your spelling and grammar is awful, your story is absolutely terrible etc?

By local standards, I am quite well off financially. However, my country is under severe sanctions, and the only international payment system available to me is China's Union Pay. But it doesn't work with Patreon or with Steam. So I remain an honest pirate. If you don't want my money, fine, that's your problem.

I've given many devs money over the years.
But there's only so much money I'm willing to spend on a porn game.
Even if I like the dev and their work, and they are releasing consistent updates, it can take years for some of these games to be completed.
I'll give a good dev some money for awhile and then just pirate after that.

I don't support scammers and milkers. That's about it. If the developer is unreliable, they don't get my money.
Unreliable means no commitment to a project, making excuses, underdelivering content. 3-4 month update period for a single game is one of the best ways to see whether the developer is consistent enough to keep supporting.
If not, there's always another.

I'm a firm believer that projects should be supported and you should pay for what you consume... even if it's given out for free. Because if you don't, amazing projects just disappear or severely slow down. If developer is being honest and treats their fans with equal respect, they deserve to have it as their job. If you can chip in, chip in. Support the game, see it grow and finally finish.
Otherwise you get a situation where over some time you see the dreaded [Abandoned] tag on it.

Underemployed and can't afford it.

3rd World Country, exchange rates are more than what some people eat in a day. Furthermore, my cards don't support international payment.
