why do so many have something against RPGM?

I have nothing against RPGM, some of my favorites game are made with RPGM (Urban Demons, Melty's Quest).
What I don't like is a visual novel made with RPGM, that doesn't benefit at all from any system it could use, and would be the same if it was made with Ren'py. If it's a visual novel, that doesn't use any stats, any fights, and are just scenes and dialogues, with some free roaming situations where there's nothing to do or discover, then RPGM is just annoying

I find the UI to be clunky and outdated, and very often the types of smutty games I play are not suited for an RPG style, so those features are either not used or unnecessarily tacked on, bogging down the game. RPGM is okay for making RPG games, but a lot of devs use it to make VNs. If you're going to make a VN, use an engine that was purposely built to make VNs like Ren'py. Using RPGM to make a VN is like using an F-22 to dust crops.

I just love the reverse feature of Renpy to pick other choices or watch content again. It is more relaxing for me to not have to quicksafe all the time.
Yep very true. Having the ablility to redo the scene, and see the other choice is a good thing.

because for some games, like My New Life, it is a buggy piece of crap. some games can use the engine fine, but others, it is just a complete buggy mess.

quite a few game i enjoy came from RPGM, the Sequel games, a lot of kagura games, MGQ paradox. to name a few i am curious to see why they get a lot of hate compared to other engines.
I prefer less gameplay, if any, and I really can't stand any of the pixel-art sections (the overworld, walking around, non-CG/animation sections, whatever you want to describe it as, since I *really* just can't stand the look of it). I also really just want the Ren'py style save system for everything (dozens of pages of individual easy to access saves with thumbnails). it's also some of the clunkiest feeling porn games I've played, with more bugs than any other engine.

The RPG games takes so much time for so litle NSFW content. Sometimes its fun to grind for the gameplay but not always.

Usually it's the time I have available.
I don't usually have 1-2 hours to throw at a game that might get me the scenes to enjoy.

Granted, if it's a game that catches my interest, I'll consider playing it.

It's less about the RPGM itself, but how devs utilize it.
For me there are 4 major points that always bugs me.

1. Many games don't need that battle system the engine provides, apart from it being boring and overused, too often it ends in a tedious unnecessary grindfest.
It's often used by the dev just becaus it's already there and then even without changing the default settings or adapting it to the world/story.

2. Then you have the maps and the movment. The maps have to look pretty so they tend to be big. But this always ends in constant running around from point A to point B and back and and forth. Again something unnecessary in many games and you spend most of the time runing around.

3. At it's core nearly all games look the same, because neither the tilesets nor the character sprites gets personalization. If one sees a screnshot of one game without any of the lewd images, they literally look the same.

4. The engine is easy to use and makes it even easier to make a game, a generic game, an unimaginative generic game. Most of those games aren't good or even downright crap.

Are all games like that? Of course not. But I don't want to spend my time and energy to filter through all the games just to find the few ones that aren't super generic.
That's why my first thought whenever I see the typical RPGM graphics is sadly: "Urgh"
Luckily of many of those games you can find the CG on sites like hitomi.la that have galleries.
This is basically how I feel about them. The occasional game ends up being worthwhile, but unless there are very strong positive reviews I generally just assume I'm going to be working through a lot of tedious and uninteresting combat and walking around through generic maps and sprites before I get to some kind of interesting content

Probably 3 reasons for me.
  • The difference in design when looking at the map and then the images. There's a feeling of them not being compatible and thus putting people off (me at least)
  • The RPG gameplay (for those that have it)
  • The UI (for everything) along with the different systems including save one. It's hard to control the sequences (skipping for instance) or handling menus depending on the circumstances.
Granted, NLT games are a miracle in this aspect.

I personally like roundscape: adorevia, I also like old neverwinter nights module Dance with rogues, if that were made with modern engine and graphics it would be awesome

Let's be honest, most people are here for a quick porn fix, not to spend hours grinding for a tiny payoff. If I'm going to play an RPG, it'll be on a console and not for getting off.

Second that motion

For me, their gameplay is not that interesting and it takes up most of the game time. There are a few that I find interesting, like Imperial Gatekeeper, but most are just a walking simulator with generic turn-based combat.

Because it's shit. It's especially bad for adult games. You spend half (or more) of the time trying to fund your way around a map (navigating is as bad as grinding) that has graphics that would be bad by 1980s standards.

I like the rpgm games too. Renpy is my favorite just for easy features being standard, but some of the rpgm games are top shelf.
