What kind of game-play do you prefer for your adult titles?

Either a VN with a rather complicated choices system, or a sandbox. I download games to enjoy gameplay, not to flip through a digital comic book, which KNs are.
Agreed, I also don't like KNs because most of them just don't have a good story.

They're a terrible blend of a game and an actual novel, and don't deliver on either. They don't have the narrative of a real story, and they don't have the engagement of any of the types of games.

KNs aren't games at all. If you aren't making any decisions, it's not a game.

For me typically male MC (although if the stories good and done well female MC stories are fine with me.) Being a male I find it easier to invest in said story/game if the MC is closer to me. I am not apposed to 2D games but I do prefer 3D when possible.

Games where you can sit back and relax without thinking too much. A little bit of thinking is fun though, so some kind of puzzle related game which aren't difficult are fun to play.

VN+, mostly. anything too sandboxy tends to turn into a grindfest at a certain point imo

I usually like the vn that dont have a choice or that have a choice that actually matter. I hate sandbox, it just forces you to stay out of the story while you grind for something or keep going back and forward to some school or building

I feel that over 80% of the adult games I play are straight visual novels, with a few "offering" sandbox play. I understand that those are the easier kinds of game-play to support, but what do you prefer? Straight VNs? VN+something? Non-VN game-play? Examples would be helpful.
closer to pure (non-kinetic, I like having autonomy over love interest choices/scenes) VN if possible, but I'm okay with limited sandbox if its rather straight forward. alternatively ones like Roguelike: Evolution, or something unlimited, which while VERY sandbox are also pretty straightforward.
