Never really understood why devs make sandboxs, the concept is a failure yet they keep doing it.

I think it stems from having unrealistic ambitions of grand world-building

Sand boxed games are OK as long at its not a grind, and a goal is clearly identifiable. Think about all of the MMORPG's out there. If a well done sandbox didn't attract a lot of people, they would not have been so successful.

Free choices within limits can be a good adventure.

Sandbox games are supposed to offer the player more choice in how to approach things, or in what order to do things. It can also provide a way to do worldbuilding in a way that does not get in the way of the central narrative.

This rarely works out well. Most sandboxes fall into the same trap, you have all the mechanics of the sandbox, but still require players to do things in a certain order and way. At that point the sandbox part of it just becomes tedious and pointless.

I think the same, I find it difficult and worse without a guide, in my case I use apk

I think it depends on the game. I enjoy sandbox modes in many games like satisfactory and the like.

I played Satisfactory on first release and loved it. I am just waiting until it's out of early access.

In AVNs sandbox shouldn't be a thing. It makes sense for a building/factory game, not for smut.

Here are some sandbox games worth playing, and they just make sense as sandbox.
"Back to Freedom" by Bald Games, "Bad Bobby Saga" by RAinces, "Desert Stalker" by Zetan,
"Family Ties" by Selina Games, "Fashion Business" by DecentMonkey,
"Power Vacuum" by What? Why? Games, "Special Request" by Nemiegs

Is sandbox in a AVN a thing? Did not realize that tbh.

As for satisfactory I play with my son in a private server it's awesome. Well as long as the updates do not break things that is.

Some games with sandbox elements get made pointless by modders walkthroughs.

I usually prefer well designed sandboxes to VNs because they let you control when you want to do particular scenes, you can read through the dating/early sex scenes and then have a bunch of characters at the actual sex scenes to actually fap to (I'm also almost entirely uninterested in non-penetrative sex in straight porn though). I also find that having a break between scenes helps avoid losing focus during them.

My opinion is that they are a failure and that they break immersion, point and click on the other hand are a very nice addition to visual novels.
Hmm. Maybe it can be thought of as a fetish. Like guys who enjoy being dominated. But these people love the grind and torture? 🤔

Honestly, *some* of them can be fun if not too tedious. Slowly builds up anticipation. But yeah, it's difficult to make a good one. Once you are stuck with no hints on how to proceed sucks. Especially if it's a bug that traps you. Or some ridiculously "impossible to guess" event you need to trigger.

You shouldn't have to require google a walkthrough.

I personally enjoy grinding games out, achievement/ Trophy hunting is fun for me too.
But, I can definitely see how tedious they can be and that they're not for everyone. Some devs also really don't know how to work a decent sandbox into their game without essentially breaking it.

There's this weird ambition to come up with something unique and eye-catching, and then it just flops miserably.

Because there is this pervasive meme that being a game makes a thing superior to other forms of erotica, and more game mechanics->more game->better.

If it was a failure, they wouldn't be making it, hmm?

if sandbox = grind, then the creators should burn in hell and if there are no great sex scenes behind this grind, they should be "used" by everyone in the seventh circle of hell
This. But there are some good sandbox games.

I wouldn't say its a failure just hard to make a good one. Its a very tight balance between grind and progression. to easy and its boring, to hard and its not enjoyable.

for me it depends if is connected to the kinetic story, otherwise it feels pointless. but I love the genre. Treasure of Nadia is a delight!

and really, whether it's hard work or not is a developer's pleasure. It's a personal joy and we never understand that until we try to make one.

How can you say its a failure if theres a lot of supporters ? Simple economics bacause theres a demand for it thats why they are making it
