Why don't you financially support devs you really like?

When I was employed I supported many devs through Patreon and Kickstarter. Dumped Patreon and made the move to SubscribeStar. Now that is not possible. If my situation changes, I will support my favorites again.

I have no money, but I would like to if I ever get some disposable income

Because it is rare for someone to finish a game. It is just drag it on while getting paid. Stories start to get messed up, because the story wants to finish, but the dev keeps dragging it on. Good devs should be able to finish a story and start a new one. Even the big name AVNs are suffering from story drag.

When I like the game I support it. It also depends, if I can do this as some ways aren't accessible in my country.

purely down to excuses and not giving me a game i am supporting i have been waiting 4 months for this game and still nothing it was supposed to be in dec but pat re on had a meltdown and removed some accounts

Finances aren't where they should be. I would/do occasionally support a finished project though.

at present i do not have spare money to throw at stuff. i have had to walk to work(8 miles away) the past few months due to my car breaking down(had timing belt fail so engine went boom). most of the time i'd rather spend on something that is complete or nearing so vs something that may disappear after a few months. when i have spare money and see a dev working on a project that can be at least a 7/10 then yes i donate(not under this profile/name)

Something happened in the gaming culture world where developers discovered they could obtain 100%, 200%, 300%, 400% etc. of their profits without finishing a game. Most of us (I assume) were adults or were old enough to remember when pre-orders became IMMENSELY popular and that was because physical copies at one point were hard to obtain in certain areas where we lived. Then digital copies became the mainstream and companies, or small-time developers discovered that people are still pre ordering a digital copy that can never run out. It went even further when developers said: "Hey, here is my idea for a game, I have the means to make it, but I don’t have the finances to sustain it, give me money on a monthly basis and I will deliver my promise to you". This message was sold to us in the masses and people from across the world donated every month anywhere between $1-$100 per month for several years (Summertime Saga ex.) Yet the game was NEVER completed. The question comes into mind, what makes this socially acceptable? Every developer for adult games or VN does this now, and it will continue to do so because the money from consumers is there. Something happened in our culture where it is considered normal to pay more than what the average cost of a completed video game is (I think as of 2024 it is now $70) for a game that is 10% completed.

For summertime saga, now this reference might be out of date since it has been 4 years since I last reviewed it, but there was a subscriber who was donating $250 a month for 1 year and 3 months before finally withdrawing their subscription. To put in perspective, which is $3,750 someone had available to spend for a game that never finished and has been in development for 10 years+ now.

Several reasons, but the main one is because I need money to pay bills. Also too many games get abandoned for one reason or other.

i prefer to donate minimal such as usd1.

It doesnt make sense when it is released at steam, at cheaper price than the monthly contribution

I just do not have money for that, i am on early retirement and my pension is not even enough to live on the lowest standards in my country, my pc is 10 years old and i cannot afford new hardware, i already have spend a fortune on mmorpg monthly fees and to pre-ordering games when i had the money, but even if i would have the money my experience with big companies, offering games for pre-order that not even deserve to be called a "beta" game and when you pre-order you think the stuff you get for your trust is something special, but then they offer that later for a couple bucks to everyone, such stuff "healed" me from pre-ordering.
In the eroge scene that i discovered relatively late for me, some not all devs destroy the trust by doing stuff like artificially delaying development, going full milking mode, sometimes with not even having the balls to give an explanation, and when i see how many games getting abandoned, that does not give me the security to spend money for a game that is still in development.

Well. i do @ketzal 😘
Jokes side.
I think the 99% of all the reason is because; i don't want to pay for something i can get for free or i don't have money.
All these games on this site are getting either leaked or public version at some point, so you never have to pay for any of these games.
You may love a game to the death but you will always love money more.
Also supporting other people too. Fx. Tinkerer He is the maker of Peasant quest.
I have been supporting this guy since 2020, Because of this thread i checked i much financially support him.
So in 4 years i have given him 190$. & at this point you see that it's not small amount & if you like more than 1 game it will stack up dramatically.

My question is for the developers. How much in your opinion is your game worth?
Fx. Balgur's gate is 60$ & As you can see i have already paid the thrice the amount, is your game more worth that that?
When can i as a supporter be like "I feel like i have done enough to support this person" without feeling guilty. Money is finite. Nothing is infinite.
Always at this thought back of my mind.

I'm curious to know why some people do not financially support devs they really like so these devs can work full time on their VNs.

Is it because you can't or because you know you'll have the update for free later (stinginess)?

Personally I've supported devs sporadically but I can't anymore because of my nightmarish financial situation (bad choices back in 2020, my bank won't let go until I'm out of it in 10 years from now ?)
for me its real simple. burned too many times by devs that i have supported in the past. my faith in "ongoing" or "developing" projects is pretty much at a zero. i also do NOT preorder from mainstream stuff or "crowdfund" projects either. i support exactly TWO devs at the moment. and even that took forever for me to be ok with again.

I'm poor. I don't even buy games on Steam until they're 75% off or less than $10.
