I will use default name, or if it makes me input, i will type a bad word in. But if I really believe in the game and want to read the whole story, I will prolly try something a bit more personal. Never my own name, though, just weird

I realized that in games where you can choose your MC's name, I always use the same name, but it's *not* my name. I almost always call my character "Doug" for some reason and if I have to pick a last name I use "Douglas" so I guess in my mind there's this dude out there named Doug Douglas just laying pipe fucking EVERYWHERE.

If the MC is a dick though I just use the game's default

I usually keep the name of the game preset.

Usually, for immersion I prefer keeping the default, unless it is obviously there to make users change to something more acceptable.
If I do have to choose it (e.g if there is no default) I go for something that abbreviates to MC, like Michael Cain, or something similar.

For me it depends on the game/VN type and how invested I might become in the story. I have used my own name. I've used an alias that I have had for "other activities" and occasionally I leave it "as is". One example would be if the developer shows the MC's face (not my favorite - tends to ruin immersion for me), I choose a different name...after all, the MC's typically don't look like me so giving them my name makes it weird - like a sort of body swap. Conversely, if it a story-line that fits into one of my preferred fantasies or fetishes and I don't have to constantly look at the face of some douche-bag looking moron that looks like he would never get laid in real life, then I will give the MC my name. If it is a female protagonist then I will typically ask my wife what name I should give her or sometimes I will just use my wife's name. Although, I have noticed that the option to rename female protagonists is extremely rare when compared to male MC's - not just because there are few games/VNs with female vs male, it is a very high percentage overall.
