I usually mute everything and have a video or stream running on the second screen.

I only like the sound if there's sex effects like moaning and butt slaps, other than that i usually play on mute.

I generally have all sound off, there have been exceptions where I had a gut feeling the music might work for a game (generally sci-fi themed ones usually go for a more muted tracklist that doesn't overstate itself). Voice acting though has been pretty atrocious on anything I've turned it on for.

alot of ren'py games use the same copyright free music and sounds so after awhile it gets annoying

Standard in every game:
0% music
50% ambient sounds
25% useless sounds (like clicks, menu and other crap)
100% voice

Standard in adult games:
More or less the same except it has sex sounds, then i reduce them to 0% as well. Cant have any moaning in my office when i'm alone ^^

No sound? i don't play the game its that simple, don't be a lazy dev add some bg music at the very least.

I actually love when games go the extra step to add sound. a background track goes a long way in my book.

Like a lot of you, I mute everything and listen to music.

I dont know if i am crazy but i almost never play anything with sound enabled, the first thing i ever do is mute all sound and i am not sure if it is a hold over from when i was younger and was trying to not get caught or not especially since in my day to day i love music.
Just as you described it.

I mute everything except the music, Music can do so much for a scene so i rather hear what the dev put in.

Sound really enhances though... the best games in general I think had very good soundtracks.

Mostly mute unless the game got a good sound track or good effects.

Usually the first thing in the settings is to drag down all the sound sliders to about 30-40%. Some games have music that seems entirely unfitting or added in through some walkthrough mod that thought to add their generic shit music was a great idea. Those cases I mute without hesitation.

Visual novels made by professionals like those made by Japanese people, I always turn on everything from BGM, Voice, SFX etc. Apart from that, I always turn off the sound.
Great point! My first game was Katawa Shoujo and I loved the way they used the piano music and sound effects. Even the clichee japanese cicada sounds. It really emphasized everything that was going on and pronounced the mood.
