Most western fantasy for the past century is Tolkien-esque. Most Xianxia and Wuxia are basically copy-paste (sometimes literally). This isn't a VN problem it's just that people are lazy, and originality is hard. Try to come up with a truly original idea and, if you think for a while, you'll remember something else just like it. Individuality is best shown in execution style, not plot points.

I think some devs do the bare minimum for an update or new release expecting to drop their school/work and live out of it or just make some quick cash and leave.
the 2 examples that comes to my mind are Silk Ari with Oath of Loyalty and SilkandMilkProductions with Heir Apparent/
There is also people hating on a VN because of some specific tags but that more like their problem.

i for one don't think the trope is bad or boring, it's just they overdone it and often make it in a cliche way, i love haremcest, suck they do it injustice.
P.S i don't like when they try to mix all kinds of genre into it, it just become a jumbled mess and inconsistent.

Just because there are more people that can use Daz and have learned RenPy does not mean that everything they spit out is gonna be the next Milfy city. So we get a lot of new games all the time (a good thing) but most are deleted after the first few screens - (a sad thing) Kinda like just because you can write in sentences does not make you the next Dostoevsky. I like the idea of new games - but I hope the Devs don't get too discouraged if it turns out not to be the next "The Brothers Karamazov"
An interesting piece of advice I remember from the music business is "proudly exclude some of the potential audience." This worked in the music industry because, at least back then, peoples taste in music was an important part of their identity so they would be drawn to bands that excluded the identities they wanted to distance themselves from.
I think a similar tactic could work in the AVN world. Incest games have become the 'Top 40 hits' station but a dev who wants to stand out could have a shot at a loyal following by focusing on NTR content, including gay (not trap) content, or fat girls, or any other significant niche that the mainstream AVN audience likes to complain about.

Honestly before the pandemic there were a bunch of really cool incest games but COVID really killed it for so many devs and the quality marker just dropped from there. Really sad honestly I hate seeing a game i'm invested in just get abandoned.

I guess if it ain't broke, don't fix it. But, yeah, adult content was never really suited to having terrific plots. As somebody that watched so much porn they started watching porn movies specifically for acting and plot, I can tell you that has been a problem with the genre since the beginning. There's only so many types of stories that will lead to having frequent sex that's always exciting and different and with a wide variety of characters from all different ages and backgrounds.
i get you! i think the only solution is learning to make games. i have startet learning 3D, 2D and am planning to learn coding and maybe ren'py or some other engine so i can make something i want to play and maybe inspire others to do the same. it could be an idea to make a section for aspiring game creator/writers/animators to meet and find people who wants to collaborate if there isn't allready one.

The other day i saw a video on the new Unreal Engine Update, the TLDR here is : it allows a bunch of really crazy things that usually takes alot of time to be heavily simplified, and improved upon while also somehow requiring less hardware Power so to say.
One of these things was overall 3D Animation work, Environmental Procedual generation etc.
Which to me simply says : Making games becomes increasingly more easy to get into, and for VN´s etc the same is basically true and the more people that get into it the more you´ll subjectively feel like the overall quality is decreasing.
In Other words and less convoluted : Games in general are more mainstream, more and more games Exist and thus the Amount of garbage / below average games you see and hear about increases also.
The same goes for everything else, Books i think are a Good example, the Books that are "Recommended" on social Media, Booktok for example; are at best = Mediocre and at worst regurgitated garbage that is basically written porn, and not even good porn at that.
So its a simple matter of, the existing Material increased significantly and the easier it gets to be a "Gamedev" "Author" "Regisseur" etc, the more Garbage you´re inevitably going to see.
For every ten games that are like "Gollum" theres always going to be atleast one "Eldenring"
