I am the opposite of DeusX. I almost ignore the sex scenes and only focus on the text. Depending on the story, I sometimes find a synergy with the character and struggle with the same choices that they do.
Unless the story is written in 2nd person I always see it as another person. Now I may imagine myself as that character, but I never really imagine that it's me.
I view Max (that's what what I name all my male characters) as a normal person with a normal family until I suddenly appear as a voice in their head that tells them to fuck everyone around them. I do that because I never could get attached to the absurd scenarios in these games. Closest was Summertime Saga but that was the first time I was like oh this can be more than just porn.
It's not my story, it's the dev's story. If the dev can't write, I can't play, but I never try to make the story "mine". Same reason I never change anyone's name, and if they have no default name for the MC I'll name him something like Covid.
I don’t self-insert into main characters (MCs). Instead, I see them as distinct individuals with their own experiences and perspectives. My focus is on analyzing and understanding their actions, motivations, and development within the context of the story. If I were to imagine a situation or scenario, it would be from an outside perspective, not as if I were the character myself. This helps me maintain a clearer understanding of the narrative and what makes each MC unique!
