I usuall either default name it or put in a fake name. I don't usually self insert into games like these and if I do I try to at least fool myself by changing the name around a little so I don't feel weird about it.

I don't play as myself. In a VN, just like in a book, it's a story I'm experiencing and it's not my story, how could the protagonist possibly be me then? If choices are present then choices that fit the character or my perception of the character is my way forward.

Only time not as myself is a female protag game. I don't play ones where you're a creature, futa or such.

On the other hand, I find it unacceptable when there is one and you can't change it.

I kind of play an alter ego of myself. I always use the same name in games but it's not my real name, I feel like that would be weird. But I do engage with adult VNs very much by getting immersed in the MC.
