I always change it since most of the game keep it blank. There're some games that I kept it as it is

What people assume is their problem and stupidity. I don't care about awkward situations. If I want a female character, I'll have it - regardless of the game. And I'll change the character name, if that's an option. Hell, if it's allowed to have your character walk around 100% naked, I'll most definitely have a female character. I was so disappointed when V had to put her clothes on when she left the apartment in Night City. What's the point ot having nudity in the game, if you can't walk your character around the city with her kitty in the open?!

I'm still experimenting with what I actually enjoy. I've been trying out using my middle name, which I have never used in real life for anything but government identification, but which still feels like personalizing to me.

But if the MC is a shithead maybe I'll feel better leaving it on default.

By the way, if a game doesn't even ALLOW it with a male protagonist, it gets deleted and a bad rating for that low effort shit.

Farily. If male I like to use my own name. Kind of annoying when you cant, especially if the name is foreign or of someone you don't like.

LIs only if they have the name of a close relative (my mom's name luckily hasn't been popular since the 50s and pretty much not used since the 70s), or a weird one. If in the game it's a daughter a name I definitely wouldn't give a kid.

If male to my own name. If female to something if it's a stupid or overly foreign name.

Game that don't let you I usually avoid.

Unless the character has my actual name, I change the name to Random. If there is a last name, it is Guy.

I change the MCs first name to my old RP Chatacters first name, I leave the last name as the default. I leave all other characters names as the default options.

I will usually leave it at default. The only time I change it is if it is a name of someone in my household or that I am close to. For some reason that creeps me out. My real name has never come up as the default one, so that has never been a problem. If I am forced to choose one, then I make it the same simple one, depending on whether it is a male or female protagonist.

Default is my go-to. Mostly because I consider self inserting to be completely dumb. Those characters live their lives and the story is their life story. Their choices. While I, as reader, help to nudge the character towards those choices they still remain confined in the neat little world related to them.
