What’s your opinion: is a degree required to land a job as a programmer, or can you make it without one? Is it worth to learn programming at all?

I have no programming skills (my worst grade in college by far was for intro to programming) but I have a family member who worked as a programmer for mid-sized technology service company for like 5 years, and for a couple of smaller companies before that. He was laid off two years ago and has been unable to find anything permanent that will pay him close to what he was making at his prior gig. He is getting by with freelance work and training in a completely unrelated field for when the freelance work eventually dries up.

O yeah... oops... at least I was partly correct. Kinda.. (not so much)

(I just love my useless translation from Japanese to English. It provide such stupid results at times. lol)

Although, I still prefer glowing meteorites raining down from the universe rather than about the weather ect..
Not to be mistaken with meteorism. Thats just when you fart a lot.

I don't get it. The rules say no 😭, so why come here if the stuff we came to ATF for isn't allowed? Just asking.
That's because that content is behind member+, wich you can become by paying activity points, wich you get by posting and getting likes.

So yeah, if you want that content, it's time to grind coins.

I’m really sorry this happened to him. I know it’s really hard to find a job nowadays.

Don't worry about it, this is a rambling thread.

You can probably do the work without one, but I would be very surprised if you get past the HR resume screening process without one.

Yeah Ive noticed, but pretty entertaining nonetheless. Guess Ill stick around on this site for longer.

I am a freshly graduated programmer and let me tell you this. Where I come from, especially now with all the AI help, university is more about trying to help you understand "how" real programming even works and how to properly use an AI. So its more about helping you learn instead of "only" teaching you how to code, even though that is of course still an important aspect of the course.

Understandable. The problem is I’m not very good at math, so I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the others.

Yeah, I think thats totally up to the university. My professor, for example, used very hard algebra which the vast majority of our students didnt fully understand, but thankfully his exams were always rather easy to pass. But aside from the first two semesters, where math was actually important, the following semesters didnt really focus much on math.
