    I'd say high quality stills with equally high quality writing would beat a mid quality animation, but the stills have to have that peak writing as well to help our brain do the rest of the imagination.

    Mist as you say, as the writing and story are good enough to be a VN indie game. A House in the Rift, may be biased since this is my favorite one but the story and characters are just great for me. Once in a Lifetime, it has a generic plot but I think it's good enough to pass as a good VN...
