Graphics for hooking people in.
Plot for keeping people in.

I think that for this niche graphics simply matter more, the bar is higher than normal. If a game's eye candy is unappealing or too niche, then a large chunk of people won't ever even bother checking it out. That's how we end up with shallow games out there that do fairly well.

Meanwhile the plot doesn't have to mean "deep" or complex, just coherent and/or believable enough with decent pacing to get a pass.

Plot. VN or a game can be great in terms of rendering quality, but if there is a weak plot, they turn into a dull, boring action. As an example, Reunion and Amnesia.
At the same time, some text-only games can give such projects a 100-point head start against this background.

Yeah, well said. But I do feel like it depends on the type of game.

Plot always, but I was spoiled by graphics to the point where if the graphics in the game are too bad but the plot is good I'd rather read it as a book than continue playing it.

Personally, similar to what Darvahn said, I need at least okay graphics to get me hooked and then a good plot to keep me hooked. However, there have been instances where I've checked out games that haven't started well graphically, but have improved as the updates have gone on

The graphics have to do the job. That's a gamebreaker. If the plot is also amazing, that's rare. Obviously kinks have to match too.

graphics at least have to be passable and fit the theme of the game, plot can be a bit loose if the graphics can pick up the slack

I would rather look at character design than graphics in general, but if I have to choose between plot and graphics I would say it's like 65% graphics. I mean the plot is important and all but if the plot really sucks ass I can at least just focus on the graphics and fly through the text.
