Abandoned VN Ren'Py Our Island [S2-S2_0.01a1][Anonymous Dev]

I dm'd you on discord about this, please just wait a few weeks to see where it goes and don't make any hasty decisions there is a very good chance that this ends just with westy and doesn't turn into anything bigger.
You seem too sure that it's westy, is there any solid reason for that?

I think one of the main concerns is that because of this SS could decide to change their TOS and start banning games with similar content.
Thats' a good reason to have a Backed.by as a backup. SS is also mostly in Russia (where not only cartoon kids are legal but so is the real version, both possession and production) with an outpost in Wyoming for their American audience (where naked cartoon kids are legal), so have no reason to care about 1 former account they have among 100k others that got busted for it, at least not nearly enough to feel the need to change their TOS. Almost their entire business model is based on gathering the exhiles banned from Patreon and elsewhere for content reasons, so it would be a bad decision to change that to also be a direct competitor to Patreon that would only allow mostly the same things they do. Even less likely when you consider Patreon was rumored to have plans to ban all porn (not just incest, lol!s, other kinks, but all sex/nudity when there's no good narrative reason for it) on their platform after Paypal started doing so, but that has yet to happen (and probably wont if it hasn't by now after over a year).

Because as far as I know he is the only dev from australia that does this type of content.

Lol! dev in Australia = Westy was the only one I know of. Certainly the most famous from there at the least (which could have been what caught the attention of law enforcement, he has been at it for almost 3 years and at one point had 4k+ SS subs). Pretty sure if it was some obscure dev few have heard of from anywhere, not just Australia, it wouldn't have caused such a mass panic attack. I did DM him on his SS. I suppose if I don't get a reply in a week then it's safe to assume true.

I feel like the best way going forward for the devs that decide to continue their projects after this shitshow is to just have their official pages clean and have all the taboo content in seperate patches that the players can download from a site like lewdpatcher. It's extra work but it's better to be safe than sorry,

The newest update was supposed to be out August 4th, but Westy went strangely silent. Bust happened August 2nd. The dev had apparently made quite a bit of money that had been seized. So I'd be surprised if it was anyone other than Westy.

For some that's probably not doable. One Summer In Loliwood is built almost entirely on taboo outside the nurse/GF scenes (forgot her name). Back when Such A Sharp Pain was still censored for F95 the patch was already 2x bigger than the rest of the AVN 3 updates ago, prob why Ketzal decided to stop censoring his work and simply not bother with F95 anymore.

Yeah it won't be easy to do for some games. But I still think it's the best idea moving forward. Between that and abandoning the games I would prefer if they did the patches but let's see what people decide to do.

My Short-Term Decision

So, it's been several days since news broke about an Australian AVN developer's arrest. I've had some time to think about how I should react to this and I've come to a short-term decision. I am going to put Our Island on an indefinite hold. I'm not deleting anything. I'm not going to pull what's already out there (as if I really could). I'm just putting it on the back burner for now.

What that means is, I'll be working 100% on Back 2 School. B2S is still planned to be ~5 releases. That might change now. I had been thinking about extending the game into the weekend (each release is a single day), and maybe this is a good reason to do that. I actually went back to work on B2S today and made several images before stopping to proofread/playtest the new release of Young Again (it's really good!). The issue with B2S is, it isn't written with Alpha releases in mind, because I was never intending to release Alphas. I'll take a look at it and see how best to break it up so Blackest Black and Lucky 13 can get that early content.

After B2S is finished, I'll revisit Our Island. I'll see how I feel about returning to the island. I had contemplated trying to "fix" the game, so it's a little safer. Aging the models younger than Kavya, removing content, etc., but none of that seemed like the right thing to do for the game.

Hopefully I'll feel better about working with those non-human, digital, ageless actors, but you never know when some politician or religious group is going to decide to make AVNs their next big thing. Even though none of this is currently illegal where I live, that can always change. The Supreme Court is a lot different today than the one which struck down the computer-generated image provision of the CPPA in 2002.

Anyway... I'm back to work.

Personally I'd work in the present, not some future that may or may not happen. All porn and 1/3 of the internet might get banned and shut down worldwide in 2035 = who cares, doesn't mean you can't make porn in the US in 2023. Even if there was a lol!-AVN case against someone right now pending and even if it made it that far it would take about that long (8-12 years, depending on lower court dockets, lawyer tactics, etc) for the SCOTUS to even get a chance to overturn their 2002 decision. It's like why make an AVN when you will just die in 50 years, not much point in thinking like that. It's kinda weird that Australia has been prosecuting lewd cartoons as real ** for almost 30 years (since 1995), yet in the US no one notices or cares until it's Westy. I also don't see how similar events in Australia that have been happening for 28 years (with cases like a guy sentenced to a year for possessing a lewd of Bart and Lisa Simpson fucking) affect the legal landscape of the US. They haven't that whole time, so why would they suddenly have a chance to? But it seems a few overreacting devs are assuming just that, as I seriously doubt none of these sky-is-falling responses would have happened if Westy was never arrested (or at least if no one outside of Aus ever found out about it).

At this point there is really nothing we can say that will change people's mind. At least in this case there is still a chance that when the fosters: back 2 school is done, the dev might work on this again. At that point enough time should have passed that the dev will make a decision with a cooler head. It hasn't even been a week since what happened so people are still in panic mode.

"Better to die standing than live on one's knees".
Those types of quotes are cool but I don't think that if any of us were in the dev's place we would want to risk getting in trouble with the law over a visual novel. Hopefully by the time he is done with the fosters things will have calmed down and he works on this again.

"Better to die standing than live on one's knees".
Yeah, but if you go to prison for this, you won't be standing. You're going to do a lot more more than just live on your knees... You'll probably be on all fours as well.

Talk specifically about the game or I'll be force to start adding warnings and clean up the page. No more Australian talk on this game thread. Take it to Off-Topic, please.

The game currently has a lot of unresolved plots and unanswered questions which we'll now have to wait indefinitely for answers to. Now, I understand why of course, but if the dev ever ultimately decides not to risk making further updates to the game, will 13games at least give us some kind of synopsis of how the rest of the story would have went?
