I'd say generally a few, as games with a bunch of characters tend to take way too long to flesh out all characters and routes.
Many characters are able to create more diversity, but tend to just create more characters I don't really care to have to deal with. I prefer having 3 characters that are decent over a game with 20 characters where only a few are interesting, and the rest just require a lot of extra time to skip past.
Some games with a bunch of character might quite good, if one is willing to wait an unknown number of years until the games are finished.

Maybe 4 to 6 max. I'm usually drawn to only a couple of LIs in any given game, so less is more.

More than three becomes tedious. I get authors have to put a lot in b/c you never want to have reader that has no attraction to any character.

Quality over quantity.
Every game that tries to create dozens of characters end up being shallow as a puddle because most of developers are unable to think ahead and realize that MAKING A GAME IS TIME CONSUMING. Then they all abandon their games.
Most cases in my experience are western games compared to japanese ones that usually focus on 3 or 4 girls maximum, giving plenty of depth to their romances.

Harem yes, but not with 20 different girls pls. Cant imagine a world where this is not tedious.

I misunderstood the question. I prefer a few characters and one mainchar.

preferably only 1 character

I agree that there should be a couple characters that have more face time than others but the more the merrier.

Few. A game like say, 23 sisters, gets out of hand fast.

Long stories can get away with more characters. But ultimately quality matters. While quality + quantity is great, by itself quality > quantity.

More than 10 and I'll start to forget who's who.

The better the character design, worldbuilding and writing, the more characters you can get away with.
Waitress #1, Office-lady #3, Neighbor #42 etc. gets real boring real fast

As the saying goes. Quality over Quantity yeah? It's kinda the same with any form of media (well movies at least). At least at the start of it. Don't start your game with like 5 different characters to learn about. But that's my opinion. Plus when you only got like 1-3 characters (including MC) to focus on you can really cook up their personalities and arcs

A few well crafted characters are far more interesting. Also a lot of games tend to introduce alwas more characters with updates to strech out the duration.

I side with the majority. Quality over quantity. Without a second thought.
