Does it feel like there aren't very many "new" games that are good?

The 'bulk' of all releases will be ... and I'll be charitable here... average...

This doesn't apply to just porn games... It applies to EVERYTHING... Movies, Books, Games, Animes, YouTube Videos...
So... like... just kinda accept it and try to appreciate and support the good stuff

My concern is after the game gets a following... production slows to a crawl and then they just milk the patreon money

That 'corruption' absolutely does happen...
I'm looking at ancient triple AAA video game companies that have all 'devolved' into that state as well
As well as 100s of bridges in every town that are slowly decaying

I wish there was more we could do about it...

Great topic thread. Thanks for sharing it. Super comments so far too by so many.

It seems the Pareto Principle is a constant. in VN games you see it again and again.

Out of every 100 Visual Novels that get started, Twenty will be lucky to make it to halfway done. Of the 100 that actually get done, 20 will be great and 80 will be good or less. I create content for marketing and the creation process is hard work. I get my butt kicked all the time. Story tropes, plots and themes are like the alphabet or musical notes, it does not matter if they are repeated so long as it's good.

What amazes me is that Aristotle, way back when, in his Poetics set up the framework for great stories:
  • Plot: The arrangement of incidents that make up the story. Aristotle considers plot to be the soul of a tragedy, as it provides the structure and direction for the story.
  • Character: The people involved in the story, including their actions, motivations, and relationships. Aristotle emphasizes the importance of character development, as it helps to create a sense of empathy and understanding in the audience.
  • Thought: The intellectual themes and ideas explored in the story. This element is crucial in Aristotle’s view, as it adds depth and meaning to the narrative.
  • Diction: The language and dialogue used in the story. Aristotle stresses the importance of using language that is natural and authentic, as it helps to create a sense of realism.
  • Music: The use of music and sound in the story. While this element is less relevant in modern storytelling, Aristotle believed that music could be used to enhance the emotional impact of the story.
  • Spectacle: The visual and sensory elements of the story, such as sets, costumes, and special effects. Aristotle notes that spectacle can be used to create a sense of wonder and awe in the audience.
Put these into any story or plot in a good/solid way and most folks will be happy with it. Experience and a community will drive how well this goes because if it is bad it will die.

Here is what I like about the VN creation space, so far: it is built and maintained by non-professionals. Why that is good is that this allows for the above framework to be applied in some random and out-of-the-box way. Experimentation will mostly be failure (80%?) but the successes will be pure genius.

A lot of industries go professional so they can avoid failure and that makes them suck. Journalism used to be for non-professionals, now they write crap! Hollywood is so rife with professional factions they will fail at some point in next few years. Anime and manga used to be so much more impactful until it went professional and big business. I could keep going, but I hope I have made my point.

To sum up: it used to listen to a radio station in my area because sometimes the songs sucked. When I say this folks ask me, "WTF?" I tell them that the radio station did not play all the same focused group based crap that the others played. This station tried to play music (modern rock) from bands few had heard from. The result was that some songs sucked, but they found new talent with great music and played stuff that others would not. This was why I loved it. Eventually they were bought out and now play music we have all heard over and over again. Over and over again, the professionals get so bogged by bureaucracy that art dies.

Chaos and experimentation are the secret to great stories,, even if we have to endure a bunch of crap. I am easy going so I will give an A for effort to all those who actually worked to create a VN, game, or story. Still, yeah, only 20% will be worth playing and only 20% of those worth playing will be amazing.

It does seem like since covid, the quality has dipped a bit, less free time for devs I guess

Part of me wonders how much of it is "corruption" or how much of it is just...lack of inspiration or motivation.
From talking to some devs on discord that have stopped or canceled their games, the main reasons seem to be:

  1. Didn't want to risk it in this environment after what happened to our Aussie friend.
  2. Ran into a kind of writer's block and couldn't figure out where to go next.
  3. Was exhausted with the grind and the lack of appreciation for the grind. Renders for tens of hours, writing for tens of hours, testing for tens of hours. First response is "the new girl looks like a troll wtf" or "typo in Chapter 3 this dev has completely phoned it in the last two updates" or something.
  4. Started the game because he was highly motivated to see something new and different that he wanted to write, realized it was way harder and more work than anticipated, and realized real life and day job were more rewarding so just kinda went that way.

Some combination of those things seem to be why most people admit they stopped or canceled their games.

Now, I'm sure some devs are "quiet" canceling where they slow down the pace of their updates so much that it seems like it might as well be canceled. With six months or a year between updates occasionally, while still raking in the subscribestar/patreon cash. I can think of a few that fit that bill. But by and large I fee like that's a few outliers and not the standard.

Over the last 6-7 years, I personally don't see a major change in the proportion between successful and unsuccessful projects. Of course, much depends on subjective tastes and preferences, the basic ratio (in my personal opinion) is 70% garbage vs. 30% promising projects. Another issue is that few of the once promising projects do not slip into the slag pile or live up to the status of "completed".

I think you made a good point.
everyone were bored during covid.
Some made AVN.
Now covid is over and they aren´t bored anymore.
im with you seamed their were better games

bahahaha. read the title and I thought, surely that cant be right, Ive played a shit load of good porn games. And then I went down OP's list of tropes and Proud Father, the Guardian, Parental Love, Dating my Daughter immediately comes to mind.

I think theres a finite amount of original themes and ideas and most, if not all, have already been done to death with a slight tweak here and there. Its kinda like a decade back where nearly every superhero movie had a sky beam as the world ending mcguffin that threatens humanity.

could be worst though. porn games can go the way of cinema these days and focus on pushing identity politics instead of telling a good story, or more importantly, the characters actually having sexy time.

Almost every game out there is uninspired trash.
There's some good games out there but they don't stroke me the right way.

Might be just that I'm getting old or something but it seems like a few years ago, you'd check the various sites and almost every week there'd be a new game or an update to a game that was incredible. Like 2-3 games a week being updated that were just really good, really decent stories that had good renders and animations, tolerable writing, etc.

And some of those games are still out there and still being worked on, with updates periodically.
But for the last few months it feels like there's so many games that are following the fetishes/trends that I'm not really into, or that just don't spend any real time on animations/renders, or that just follow the same templates as all the other popular games.
I mean, I like Harem games for example but it seems like almost every Harem game is copying the most popular few harem games and I can't even tell you how many "Dad that's fucking his daughters, wife, sister, nieces, their friends, etc" games that follow almost exactly the same plot.

1. Get seduced by daughter #1.
2. Hide it from wife.
3. Sister comes back into life due to a divorce from her husband.
4. Fuck sister like you always used to.
5. Find out sister's daughter(s) are your kids, fuck them with sister's help.
6. Sister helps you fuck your daughter #2.
7. Wife finds out you're fucking niece, gets mad.
8. Easily talk wife out of her anger with the power of dick.
9. Fuck wife, daughters, sister, nieces, some of their friends.
10. Daughters ask you to impregnate them constantly.
11. Sister talks you into impregnating her daughters.
12. You're a very wealthy businessman who also fucks his assistant.

It's like...this could describe half a dozen games I like. But why?

It's like that "you're a college graduate and your dad just died so you moved home but now you have to fuck your mom and sister, or they lose the house to gangsters!" type of plot.

Why isn't anybody coming up with unique stories anymore? Why are all the games feeling the same?

Is it just me?
I agree with you, games nowadays are just becoming copies of each other.

It does seem that way. However, the solution is continued interest in these games by the community. If there is a void to be filled someone will fill it, ESPECIALLY if there is a way to make money from it. Keep LC alive, support creators making content to your liking, and we'll all see an increase in quality content.

It's just like any other medium, really. Most movies are garbage, most books are garbage, most music is garbage etc.

It's an unfortunate part of life. No matter what you're interested in, you gotta separate the wheat from the chaff.

Honestly some creators just want to create something quick and easy to make a quick buck.

I will use non-porn example for this (LONG POST):

Some of you may disagree, but there's only so many story types out there, and each has its conventions and required scenes.

Ex: in Romance
-Lover's Meet
-First Kiss
-Conflict in the relationship
-Proof of love
-etc...

You can totally innovate, sure. But that's like 2% of the stories. And when you get it, some EXPECT the 2%.

Other Ex: Baldur's Gate 3.
It innovated. It sold well. Many loved it. The end result?
Many now consider Baldur's Gate 3 to be PAR instead of excellence as an exception.

Porn games are no different. Conventions:

In Harem, you've got:
-Alpha MC.
-Multiple LI.
-Next to no conflict about the MC being the only one to have >1 LI.

In NTR, you've got:
-Loser MC.
-Main LI frustrated, begins to cheat/be corrupted.
-End goal: total humiliation of the MC.

If you're bored of porn games, I don't think it's that the recent games are bad. It's just that you are pro consumer... and that's ok.
But if people expect the 2% to be par, it wouldn't be the 2% would it?

Now, if some declare that they deserve the 2%... 100% of the time... I can't respond to that.

I have to agree with you, I used to be able to sign on and play my favorite games and by the time I finished the update on one , one of the others I liked would have a new update out. As well as the same story line ths updates are further apart or the games are being abandoned.
