I prefer images with a good pose and nice angles. I remember being very underwhelmed with Big Brother having so few images with very stingy angles, you had to work a lot for the scenes for very little payoff. BB Another Story completely fixed that to me but unfortunately the dev decided to rework everything.
Love good animations but if you can't nail the images you shouldn't even attempt the animations, lots of games really don't attempt and just introduce the same animations we've seem a thousand times. It's very hard to make a new animation that has a decent loop and looks natural.
I'd say generally I'll only play a game if there are animations, with a few exceptions anyway, but they're a huge draw for me. Though I've played some games with shockingly bad animations that would have been better unanimated..
I think the success lies in the good ratios of great images + occasional animation. For example, 2-3 animated parts, plus a good amount of images from multiple angles is just such a great combo if done right.
Depends on how good of quality we’re talking here. If it’s shit animation but with high quality art, them yeah gimme that. But also if it’s a damn good animation with shitty art then it’s still nice. Gotta be good at one or the other, not bad at both
