Advice from a person who has been there -- 30 years ago I lined my driveway with 64 railway sleepers - putting them into place was a horrendous job -- took three days to do them all but the result was beautiful. Now they are rotting and need removal -- and there is simply no way I could do such a thing. The mind is willing but the flesh is friggen weak and I am not even going to attempt it without a defibrillator strategically placed for use.

I hate moving railway sleepers. If you're lucky they hold together and you've got a giant chunk of wood to pull out of the ground and carry to the dump site. If you're not, they're rotten enough to fall apart and you've got a ton of hand sized chunks of wood to clean up. Both are a pain in the ass but at least when they stay whole the job gets done quicker.

Well at least it was only 6 I had to do. Not easy in hot weather and had no way to move them other than by hand. Must have looked like Jesus, carrying them on my shoulders with my long hair and beard lol. Kind felt like I was being crucified.

One of the worst parts about being retired is trying to fill in the time wasted at work. Particularly if you grew up BEFORE console systems, internet etc. Its much harder to fill the time.
My dad has had that problem. Had to unretire and go back to 40-50 hours a week for a year, then he slowly scaled back over the course of 2 years before he finally was able to let go.
One of the jokes we have at the office is that we are at something akin to a work release program.
Our prison cells are the cubicles, lunch time is our time in the yard and our time away from the office is part of our work release before we find ourselves back in our Prison cells the next morning.
Eventually we'll find out away out of prison for good but for most of us, its a 40-50 year sentence before we can fully get released.

Honestly, the evil surgeon variant convinced me to never pull the lever (unless it's 1000 vs 1 or something).

I'd have sleepless nights about letting 5 people die, but I'd be destroyed if I murdered 1.

I too would be sad if I only got to murder one and had to let five others escape.

Lol yeah, good luck with that venture. I know independent contractors or self-employed can make their own hours, but from what I've seen horror story wise, it usually means spending more time suffering on the job than the rest of us.
I don't envy your position there. BUTTTT you do have the potential of making more money than i ever could being a corporate drone if you get enough clients.
That and no bosses to suck up to is a nice touch.

In college some of my classmates acted like self-employed was like going on an adventure. No dude, you are not Bilbo Baggins.

i would not recommend it to anyone and recommend it to everyone // edit: it almost broke me in the first years (i started a couple months before covid)

currently im doing all by myself (besides taxes ) and i think about my business every day
BUT i did not go broke during covid AND if i increase my income by about 20% i can get my first employee and start the process of gradually transferring responsibility until im "free" (kinda)

I cant imagine how stressful it has to be working all by yourself, what if you need few sick days? the amount of calls and e-mails i would have to make apologizing to everyone would brake me
I wish you get a competent first employee soon to take some of that weight off your shoulders!
