I don't mind a multitude of girls. But I do agree that the storyhas to evolve with all of them.

A few,
It takes more time to get to the good bit when there's to many girls

3-4 main LI's.
5+ secondary but optional.

Depends on the setting.
If the mc is a teacher it makes sense to get the class and maybe some more.
If the mc is traveling alot it makes sense to collect whats on the way.
If the mc wants to take over a city/country it makes sense to gather a huge harem of supporters.
...
And it depends on the dev, if its some lazy loser the game will be abandoned no matter how few or many girls there are. Starting a game may be a fun project, but dont lie to yourself, every good game takes years of development, so even if you like to meddle with code and art it will become work at some point and your supporters will demand regular updates, especially those who pay for it.

it depends on the story, but yeah a lot of games when bad and story falls apart just because they add to-many new characters for meaningless content. but you can have good stories with many characters, you just need good writers

Quality trumps quantity. If quantity is what you are left with in an otherwise good game; then quantity has a quality all of its own.

I think going with a smaller cast is the way to go for a lot of games. That gives enough time to flesh out all the love interests and scenarios.

Do you prefer games that have just a few characters, or games with many characters?
Personally, I prefer just a few, because I find those games are generally more immersive. For those games where there are many characters (usually where the male protagonist screws every girl he can find) I find any actual story gets lost. I reckon the Dev has to spend a lot of time to cater for all possibilities (and often updates are more infrequent).
Same.
I rather have 2-3 other girls in the game and you can evolve a relationship, than just fuck 20+ girls, random, with no real story behind it.

I think there can be too many but i prefer more characters if it doesn't cause too much quality issues.

Definitely just a few. With a bunch the quality usually suffers.

It depends. Sometimes having a few is great, but other times the setting begs for more characters.

If you have too many characters, you cant have much content with any of them. Maybe you have more content with the main cast, but then, why do you even have the rest? I like games center on a couple of characters, 6 is already a lot, and maybe some content with the side characters

At ~400 games, I don't think I ever played one with characters being "too many"

I absolutely agree with you...at least if the dev completes the game ^^

I'm 50 and not sure if I played 400 TOTAL computer games (as in not just adult) in my life...

So you are even to lazy to play...

Modern ones are just way too difficult and complex. Like 3 different joysticks and 20 different buttons, etc. How the fuck are you supposed to remember what does what? 1 joystick with 1 button were the days.

Depends on the set up, but nothing more annoying than when new side characters just randomly appear to take up valuable content for several updates simply to delay progress with the main LIs.

Shorter game better with less characters.
Longer game can have more characters but they have to be introduced at a good pace and not bomb you with 15 names to remember within the first 3 minutes of the game.
As for switching characters goes I prefer to have 1 playable protagonist however there is one huge and only exception to this rule in which I'd prefer to have 2 playable characters.

I agree
