discussion What unsolicited advice would you give to porn game devs?

My man, the best visual novels are text heavy. Think FS/N, Grisaia, Muv-Luv Alternative.

Could we let people have fetishes? I mean, you're not forced to play the games, and there is quite a market. Especially for NTR.

I totally agree, but I also agree that you shouldn't do it in the middle without warning.
That's because it's very important a roadmap or at least a basic roadmap with the main points.

If it adds something I hate in the middle (futa, ntr, etc) that's automatic delete and 1 star rating. Unless completely avoidable. And I mean able to set it doesn't happen.

I mean, games add fetishes in the middle all the time. I saw a game suddenly get "anal" as a tag, which also disgusts some people. So where is the line? Honestly, let the game dev do whatever he wants, as long as he remembers that the customers can come and go.

It's a bit apples and cucumbers though.
I think most people can agree that things like vaginal, creampie, anal, and even (light) male/femdom, etc. are pretty vanilla things. Sure, not everything is to everybody's liking, but be honest here. Have you seen people getting outraged and flaming a dev for adding an anal scene, vs them adding something more controversial?

yep, under those terms, you can think of tags in two big categories: vanilla and hardcore,
and the difference between them is the reaction they trigger when you add them to your game.

I'll preface this by letting you know that I know nothing about the development side of things. So this will be purely a consumer input and my personal opinion. Some of the main things I like in games are variety (especially when models tend to look very similar in different games it can be quite annoying), I love choices that matter in games (not choices where it basically changes the outcome of the next 3 or 4 scenes), I like the addition of being able to toggle on/off certain kinks and the games that have characters with different kinks and personalities (not just the usual every character you meet will deep throat you, balls deep vaginal even if they're a virgin and anal). character customization can be a huge plus ( like different outfits, hairstyles and even MC customization. hope this helps.

Dear Devs:
Holiday Specials, DLC, etc means jack squat if the actual game is still a 0.2b(hotfix) pile of bugs. It's alright to do a full release that's all fixes and rebalances, as long as you tell us upfront.
Many Whale donors are not your friends. Someone jumping in mid development with a wad of cash and a fetish request doesn't want to see the game completed, they want separate you from your broke-ass supporter base as a vulgar display of power. If a Whale doesn't egage with your other backers and fans in an open channel, block the twerp and call them out for the other devs.

You cant just throw femdom into the light category. Thats way out of touch with the average.

[MattShizzle]

As to not adding controversial shit - Diary of my Perversion added a disgusting futa in the middle last update.

Don't announce your fucking game as "anti-NTR" only to make 90% of the content NTR, asshole.

[MrSunDragon]

Don't be afraid to get weird and experiment with kinks, different model sizes, lighting, scenarios and artstyles

[Matm95]

I would council devs to write their story in full, before doing anything else. No need for fully written dialogue and prose, but a complete outline is imo necessary to do a good story. Just to avoid flat character arcs and nonsensical plots.

Yeah, that also allows them to have a planned end, rather than the common sudden ending.

[MattShizzle]

Also they don't realize what they want to do later they have to change something that breaks old saves. The 7 Ps - Prior Planning and Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

keep things simple and finish the game

Finished games are just better. That endless development seen in the games that really milk their audience is frustrating. (*Cough* Summertime Saga *Cough*)

Not only that but a lot of times the devs get bored before finishing the game, abandon it and start a new game again and again

I just saw this thread when looking for a place to ask a question. And I feel this info could be compiled into a very helpful list for devs to look at. Probably in 2 parts.
1: Devs advise to new devs. Prob a list of the top 20 things that devs submit/agree on (using a poll I would imagine)
2: Users advise/request to devs. Similar, but from non-dev people, what they HATE in a game (dont do stupid shit like "I hate NTR" "I hate lesbian sex", it needs to be non genre/tag related, such as I saw one earlier about adding keyboard shortcuts to menus. That feels like a user idea, not a dev idea, and makes sense). Same as last, prob a top 20 list from a poll. The OP could do it here, or someone else could parse this thread, make a new one with a poll (or 2?) and make it into a nice list. I would, but... lazy as fuck.

Update the game with the purpose of ending the story, not milking your subs.

I completely missed that you replied, sorry.
No, I didn't put male/femdom into the light category, I meant LIGHT fem/maledom. Think like roleplay, where you girlfriend is on top and is being dominant, but not completely, just like a kink. Same as if you were to push and hold her down in doggystyle.
Not something that would happen every time you have sex, but from time to time to spice it up.
Not her dressing up as a dommy mommy, and tying you to a chair, if you understand what I'm trying to say?

All mechanics of the game must work together. For example, a character has a hunger meter and must to eat. If these two things only effect each other - it only annoys players. Because it forces players to do something, that is unrelated to the rest of the game. A fix to this would be something like this: hunger affects mood, which affects work speed or talk skills, which affect money gain and so on.
Ideally, it should be possible to connect any two mechanics in the game like this, hopping from one to another.
