In a sentence or two, let us know what you think is why the word compromise almost does not exist anymore. This is not about politics. It is about how we deal with people ourselves.

At some point, children started getting raised to believe that they could always win, that everybody should get equal results (or at least nobody should get results better than what you get), "time outs" instead of real chastisement - and parents that didn't even carry through on time outs when their little darlings started to scream - and the delusion that no opinion matters more than your own. Somewhere along the line, a whole generation of brats got raised and they started raising their own brats. Now everything that you don't agree with is racist or some kind of phobic and if you don't get what you want, you're gonna scream your head off until you get it.

I think another issue was the whole "safety" push: the truly stupid and truly clueless used to take themselves out before they could reproduce, or they did something really fucking stupid and learned from it and ended up being better for it. Instead, what we have now is idiots reproducing and brats with the mentality of toddlers running around in the bodies of adults, never wanting to take responsibility for their actions, but wanting to have everything they desire without much (or any) effort.

We simply have a higher ratio of fucktards than we had in the past and we basically have to hit bottom as a society before anyone will learn better (and we're pretty close).

Personally, I talk things over with people that seem to be open to it and have a clue; if they can't have a discussion without going ballistic, then I walk away and ignore them - they'll have to experience something pretty damn awful (no, getting the wrong coffee order doesn't qualify) before their minds will be open to real discussion. Even then, we may still disagree, but at least we'll be civil.

I tend to not hang out with the people who I cannot have a logical debate with or put myself in situations where I have to listen to them.

I got this question from having to fly somewhere the other week. We had no major issues on our flight, yet it was not hard to walk through the airport and not see people who like to argue or can never be wrong. Honestly, I find it a little disturbing. I am considering, that the airlines are private companies and can pretty much tell us how they will get us from point a to point b. We do not have to fly that airline if we do not like their policy. I guess I see things more simple. And I am not even going to discuss how people want to argue with other people now in the airport. It is hard to look down and try to avoid the situation.

I would have to say that the one thing that accelerated the ending of people agreeing to disagree in recent times was the internet. The combination of anonymity and closed groups that exclude any opinions that differ has pushed people to become more extreme. Heck, there are stories of people being banned from groups for knitting 'Wrong'.

Just a thought

It's been over a decade now since anyone online has agreed to that.

Nowadays it's either I'm right your wrong and we will never agree to anything.

Can't really say why but it is what it is nowadays, and doubt it will change the other way again. 🤷‍♂️

I disagreed.

Humanity has always been 90% fucktard. Anywhere it looks like we picked up some moral backbone, the fucktards move in and start pushing it to extremes and trying to violently attack anyone that isn't in the morals gang, acting as the antithesis of the thing they claim to champion, assuming mere group membership is a get-out-of-jail-free card.

Shitty parents have always existed. Only fucktards have to beat their kids to make the kids pretend to listen. And they will only pretend. Ask anyone that advocates for harsher punishments for kids about their own childhood and you get a longwinded story of how they dodged their fucktard parents to go pull off fucktarded stunts in their youth.

Demanding PITA parents have always existed, vying and scheming to get their precious little angels undue rewards.

It only takes a small percentage of kids acting out for the news to make something look like a moral panic. My city's schools teach more than a hundred thousand kids. If only 1% are asshats, that would be a thousand shitmongers stirring the pot every day. But because of the spineless admin hamstringing the teachers and staff, the 1% fucktard crew causes vastly disproportional upset in the system and is rarely stopped. I guess I need to get off my ass and into politics at some point. One can only scorn a system without trying to fix it for so long before the blame starts sitting squarely on you for not stepping up.

These people are usually cast as villains where they are written of, but for every one that inspired a story, there were a hundred or thousand more than quietly got favors done for money or volunteering or because so-and-so's so-and-so is friends with so-and-so.

It's not a new problem. it's more the norm. the kids are fine. society isn't collapsing from moral degeneration, and most of the muckraking we see are a few well todo dickheads pushing media empires to start bullshit to keep people distracted while they pick their pockets.

the 1950's and earlier are often cast as some glorious time when everything was well, but they were actively cultivating that image. there were still fucktards and horrible dickheads galore, their bullshit just got swept under the rug. families hid abuse and shit to save face. institutions hid scandals and crimes and shit to save face. the news let political shit slide for city hall access and to support whoever the owners liked. society shifted so these things are getting discussed more and outed as a matter of course, and it turns out there's a lot more horrible shit out there than most people were lead to believe by the sanitized version of reality the past kept whitewashing everything with.

the only thing new in the world is that every angry dickhead ranting at the local dive and every tinfoil schizo blathering about the demons in their crayons can head online and vomit their bullshit into every discussion they haven't yet been banned from, while riling each other up and striving to out ass each other by being angrier or more deranged in the pockets of the net where they gather up to suck on their collective wounds caused by decent society telling them to fuck off with their various bullshit.

You are OVIOUSLY wrong. :)

Sadly, I fear you are correct. My hope is that we can find a way back to agreeing to disagree before things become so extreme that a tragedy occurs that forces the world to change (whether for better or worse I don't know).

Just a thought.

P.S. Anyone who thinks Oatmeal Raisin cookies are superior is WRONG and should be denied the JOY to be found in GLORIOUS Chocolate Chip Cookies. :)

Well I love both Oatmeal Raisin cookies and Chocolate Chip Cookies. So we can both agree this time.

Your first paragraph in my opinion is dead-on.

And I was not trying to be political. I just wondered if it was just me or does no one agree to disagree anymore, and when did it stop... OF course, like everything else in the world someone will twist a honest question or observance into a political problem.

Forget that it is peanut butter cookies... Not oatmeal raisin or chocolate chip.

Nope, peanut butter.
Love peanut butter as well. So once again we agree.

Also wasn't accusing you of politics just warning others to keep the replies tame, and not political.

Just look at a few above and I've seen these threads shutdown before.

You want one sentece? Here:
Admitting to being wrong is viewed with disdain and not fighting for one's own opinions is seen as giving up and thus being wrong.

Here a bit more:
People seek confirmation and validation in their own beliefs/opinions, everything and everybody who opposes that puts a dent in their bubble that they have to fight to not get it popped.

Especially nowadays when everything is so overblown and put out of context and proportionality, so that every stand-alone opinion is automatically tied from outside to a whole package of other opinions (i.e. If you like this, you HAVE to also like this and also makes you to be AGAINST that).

And so people start arguing for things even though they don't support them, simply because they are in the same broad category. Even if they know that it's wrong in their own opinion.

Oh, and people who think they aren't in a bubble of own beliefs and opinions, are the ones stuck in it the most.

I disagree that "let's agree to disagree" went away.

And you can't change my mind, bucko!

So let's agree to disagree.
Well I agree to disagree this time. Look at that it's easy.
