I always checkout the gallery after my first full play. Hate when gallery items are locked out because you need to play multiple times making different decisions.

It depends how grindy the game is and if the story or the quality of the content is worth it, but mostly earn it.

if it's a good game then i prefer it locked, if it's a game that's only good for some scenes it can be a good option (for example when the graphics and or animations are awesome, but the game is poorly written)

I always download a mod to unlock everything so that I can see what all is available to see if I even want to bother playing it yet, then I lock it.

While it do impact on my motivation to keep playing it is also the best way to know if the game fill the niches i came for or if it just has that one scene or none at all. The sad thing is that many games with in-combat sex struggle to fit those scenes in the gallery

having to ability to unlock the gallery from the start would make playing the game worthless if you are there just for the sex scenes
