Thoughts on some Grinding/effort in games?

A bit of give and take for me.

SOME investment feels really good for immersion, but I don't want to do math problems , work out, and chores for 20 hours of a 22 hour play through.
Then again, with no effort or grinding, the game doesn't feel as compelling?
I agree.
Some grinding is fun but if it takes all the fun out of the game then off to the trash can it goes.

As long as it is a mechanic that will reward the player and not to cover for lack of content, than it's fine.

aslong as the loop is fun then I dont mind but so many games just make it so tedious that its just not worth it.

Grinding is good, but sometimes you just want to sit down, relax and not rack your brains

Just make the reward of completing some activity be meaninful

Gameplay has a MAJOR effect on the grind in my personal opinion. If the gameplay is fun and truly engaging, then I'll grind the game without even thinking about it.

It is a balancing game by it self. too much grind and it gets boring. to few working towards the goal can make it feel not as fun.

I honestly don't mind the amount of grind as long as the reward is proportional to the effort. Most of the time, though it doesn't really feel like it is.

I think NLT games have a great balance in this respect - you get early spice, and have to work up to the main LI. Games where you have to replay the same scenes/interactions over and over and over like Foot of the Mountains are extremely frustrating.

I don't mind it when it comes down to single player games, most I've played had a nice balance, except for Online games.......GTA Online, I'm looking at you.

I think I said it before on a similar thread:

It's all about balance, the kind of game you are playing or what do you want.
  • If all you want is some blue ball relief, then grinding is bad
  • If the gameplay sucks, grinding is bad
  • If you don't feel any kind of satisfaction (stronger character or better relashionships), grinding is bad
  • TOO MUCH IS ALWAYS BAD
Grinding can be good:
  • as a way to elevate tension in a tense story
  • to elevate dopamine hits on rewards
  • to simulate feelings, like everyday boredom
  • to simulate how hard something can be (must be together with something easy for comparison)
As everything, grinding is a tool. And if misused, has the potential to destroy a game.

Unless it provides something meaningful and substantial like semi-interesting gameplay or puts some pressure/tension to a story for a protag but doesnt feel like its a chore, than it just serves to artificially inflate game time. Most of grinding in the games are sadly falls in to second category - just mindless bloat.

The devs need to find a way to make grinding fun, like new variables everytime or just simply light grind, I just hate it when the grind is heavy, and then there's also RNG fucking up the time I spent for the game

Grinding just for to make the game 'longer' is just a 'no go' ... Grinding should be rewarding because it is fun.

This is personal taste, but having grinding (depending on what type of game) is something I enjoy because it makes me feel like I am working for a goal and sex is the reward.

Specifically in RPG games like black souls or Rance or something where you rape as a reward, me getting stronger is a type of immersion that makes me feel like I am the one conquering the game, and in turn makes me harder

I'm a big fan of grindy games. Been playing Warframe for around 11 years at this point...

Grinding isn't bad as long as it's fun, but i dislike it on porn games because they're usually a waste of time that rarely pays off.
