My guess is that he either got in trouble with the law, someone doxxed him like what happened to detective necro or someone close to him like his wife found out about the game. If it was something related to the law, I think it would make more sense to delete his discord server and his SS page instead of putting it in vacation mode. But unless he says something I think we will never know.

Due to recent life events, I am canceling all of my games and future works. I'm going to spend more time on the couch relaxing with my wife.

I have placed my account in vacation mode for the next year to indicate that no work will be done. You won't be charged during this time, but I would like to encourage you all to stop your subscriptions. I can't close the account with active subscribers.

I have started deleting posts to disincentivize you to remain subscribed. This slow process will continue until there are no more posts or no more subscribers.

This is actually what I was talking about. Firstly, deleting your stuff from something like SS does not protect you legally, despite what anyone says. There will be a digital copy of your account somewhere, even outside of something like The WayBack Machine. So if there's anything problematic, deleting it wouldn't protect you. And with governments spending money these days like it's going out of style, they could easily pay way more than they need to in hiring a contract hacker to look into pulling more info on a person (making the likelihood of someone agreeing to work for them increase).

But I don't want to sidetrack things too much. IJS that I don't think deleting makes as much sense as a result of legal issues given what I've mentioned, and since "recent life events" can mean practically anything, it feels like jumping to conclusions to assume it's got anything to do with the law. I'm just going to go with this: he has some reason to step away, and this might be a permanent departure. Since he specifically mentions not being able to close the account while there are active subscribers, that sounds like much more than taking some time off.

In all honesty, I had given up hope on the island but was hoping b2s would be completed.
What ever the "recent life events" were they must've been serious to just down tools and close up shop immediately.

Well this fucking sucks. Dunno what happened on that trip in the past 2 weeks but it must have been a bad one. I wanted to see the end of The Fosters 2 and the next update of Our Island, dammit. Hell he even had plans for some other 2nd AVN from that poll earlier this year. I really wish he would have given more specific reasons rather than keeping shit so vague. It seems 0.6 (ending?) of TF2 was already 2/3 done.

Well for him to disappear like this and delete that thread it's probably because he got in trouble with the law.

Unlikely, he's in the US (TX) where free speech is a thing. Sure law enforemement can harass him if they knew who he was and where he lived if they really wanted to annoy him but other than that after lawyering up they'd have to prove an obscenity case for anything like prison to happen, which hardly ever happens anymore as that's a high legal bar for the prosecution to leap. No specific reason given so who knows, my first guess is sudden health problems (him or his wife). I guess there will be speculation on the actual reasons for the next couple years.

Unless I'm thinking of a different dev his wife already knows and doesn't care. At least with Ketzal his wife actually cowrites SSP so that will never be a worry.

makes you think twice about how secure this site is. I'm not sure how difficult it is to prove an obscenity case, but it does give me pause. going through court even already can smear your name. especially if its tied to these kinds of subjects. never mind prison for years over some pixels.

I just jumped the gun and assumed that it was something with the law because it was so sudden.
It's still kind of weird that he deleted the other thread and left the others up. But there is content in the original the fosters that is probably as "bad" as the content in our island. So if he wanted to cover his tracks because of a legal issue he would have to delete all game threads.

Yeah, even though I'm now bummed out/depressed (mostly due to being totally unexpected, 13 was one of the more enthusiastic devs that did more or less weekly updates and had other games planned beyond TF2 and even Our Island). Went on a trip on the 3rd after posting previews of 0.6 and now this shit, so some mystery shit happened in that 11 days.

Yea it fucking sucks but I doubt we will ever know the reason. If you look at his profile he has been checking both this thread and the thread on cuck95 throughout the day and hasn't said anything so whatever it is he wants to keep it private.

It's the internet, and short of a CME ending the powergrid, internet, and civilization with it there is no covering tracks once something is on it, pointless to even try as things like the Wayback Machine are a thing.

Esp when it was so close to the end. 0.6 might have been the ending update and it had 2 out of 3 alphas done. Slept on it and still in WTF? mode. I mean he didn't stop when Westygate happened last year even though he was temporarily spooked and made him put OI on hold so that just made it even more unexpected, I thought he was one of the few devs that didn't give a fuck like Blackheart, Ketzal, and a precious few others and would keep making AVNs for years to come long after OI, TF2, and whatever 4th AVN he planned from that poll earlier this year was finished.

His wife may also be monitoring his time on this site and Cuck95 to make sure he doesn't post anything that could be seen as critical.

Otherwise, it could be a health issue (either him or his wife) and he wants to spend whatever time they may have left, together.

Yea it could be a lot of things, but since what happened last year, it's hard to not think it's a westy situation. The only thing that leads me to believe that it's not, is that if that was the case they would've seized his stuff so he couldn't try to delete evidence.
It would just be cool if he just made a post saying that it's not anything related to the law to put people more at ease. He doesn't need to reveal private details.

It seems that lately that a lot of developer (especially one's in this category) seems to be dropping like flies with little explanation. Especially since the whole PF dev's arrest. I don't know, maybe I need to remove my tin-foil hat but I'm starting to get worried. I just hope there are not some vigilantly group out there harassing and scaring (or even blackmailing) dev's out there. I mean, you do have a lot of "save the pixel" warriors out there now a days. Just hope that they are not taking it too far.
