as a kid, I loved Star Wars (80s)

Once I grew up, I realized Star Trek is better and is a future to actually aspire to. Star Trek is the dream for humanity.

As cool as Space Taoism is, I will take a Holodeck anyday.

I was never able to get into star trek, I have tried several times with several series but it just doesn't hit me. If you are talking about pre-disney starwars it wins hands down. Post-disney starwars star trek takes it however by merit of not being absolute garbage.

i'm a fan of the older star wars media (e.g. OT, Sequel, KOTOR 1+2), and only Andor and Rogue One out of the new stuff since disney took over.
would agree with others in that it is more space fantasy/space opera in comparison to Star Trek which is definitely more proper sci-fi with its themes and tech.

i think i'll start getting into star trek now, but i need recommendations on where to start and what to avoid.

however, i feel the need to state that both these franchises will pale in comparison to WARHAMMER 40K!
wait......oh fuck, that got ruined too....

Start with TOS unless 1960s is off putting then try TNG, avoid first two seasons. Voyager i guess is decent entry level Trek if you must, its not the dark show they intended, but Tng warmed over.

Star Wars have some good movies, some (very) bad, and a nice extended universe. I think Star Trek win with movies and tv shows, but Star Wars win with the extended/legends universe. Both are important, and have nice things to give.

Star Wars easy, not as much for the movies (thought they are great) but the EU for SW is freaking amazing

They're too different to even compare. Well, they should be, modern Star Trek often feels like it's made by people who don't know the difference.

Anyway, Star Wars is for fun, it's not supposed to be that complicated (that doesn't mean it's bad). Star Trek is for when I want to see things like someone questioning what really means to be a living sentient being or... or when I want to see space horrors beyond human understanding fuck up a random members of the crew while everyone runs in circles for 40 minutes trying to understand what's going on while using words that make no sense but sound scientific enough.

I can agree with this. Both have their place. Star trek is meant to be based on science (with bit of far fetched imagination). Star wars is straight up Fantasy. Nothing wrong with it as it makes for good stories.

Never seen any of these movies or TV shows. Im really interested in starting though. Girlfriend is super into them but I dunno it just seems like a huge thing to get into when its already such a large amount of content, kinda like one piece or warhammer. At which point did any of you get into either or for the star wars or star trek universe? Like what grabbed you and made you stick with it?
