wow, when the thread started in 2024 both franchises were on their last legs;

Star Trek - STD last season (dogshit, so bad they had to push into the far future so as to not contaminate main 25% different timeline), Section 31 (dogshit, lowest ranked in franchise on RT) and Academy in the works (dogshit, cancelled while still airing 1st season), rumoured Star Trek 4 movie (never existed, was announced 2-3 times to gauge interest - there was none).

Star Wars - Mando was the year before and its last season killed it, the Acolyte (dogshit, cancelled in 1st season), some cartoons no one watched.

Now both are dead. All current Star Trek is the last of Kurtzman Trek, then its finally done with. Star Wars, finally made another film - after announcing 14 that were never, and will never be made - and it did worse than Solo, smashed at the box office by a film made for under £1 million.

But in answer to the question, and only looking at both pre-JJ Abrahams. Star Wars is a movie franchise so has better movies, Star Trek is a Tv franchise so has better Tv series.

Will either reclaim their glory? Disney made Star Wars a girls franchise, or tried to, can't see it recovering unless it remembers its for boys. Star Trek, needs to understand its not Star Wars and its not for everyone (its a nerd show) and forget trying to make action TV series and go back to thoughtful TV series. Seems like both are chasing new fans at the expense of old fans, but not getting them in the numbers needed for success.

I do enjoy starwars more as the starship battles are very fun and appealing to me. Plus the fantasy elements with the jedi and sith are also fascinating. The lightsaber duels of the prequels are also some of the best choreography in cinema history with Darth Maul vs Quigon & Obi as well as Anakin vs Obi being the best examples. Also the Clone wars did the prequels justice with Anakins back story and the introduction of characters like Rex, Ashoka, fives and Ventress

Star trek for what i hope the future is like at least one day. Looking at you next gen/ds9. Star wars for when a little fantasy needs to be thrown in. Like both though.

I'm a Star Wars fan but I think the original movies of both franchises are the best.

Which franchise do you prefer?

I personally prefer star wars. But I believe both franchises are good in their own way

Apple and orange as one as science fiction and the other is science fantasy. But Star Trek every time.

Both are long past their event horizon. Kurtzman has destroyed Star Trek. And Disney has killed Star Wars. I even watched Mando movie. It was meh. The worst cinematic Star Wars ever.

I’m not a fan of any of them, but I liked watching the old Star Wars films from around 2000 and earlier—the first three are the best. The quality gradually gets worse, and the newer ones didn’t really interest me, so I didn’t feel like watching them.

As for Star Trek, the TV series was fun, especially the old one with Captain Kirk and Spock, but I didn’t watch all of it. And the movies never really attracted me.

I liked the Tos movies and some not all of the TNG movies, the first JJ film is a good action flick and not really Star Trek. the problem with the movies, is one Wrath of Khan created. so many of the films try and have a space revenge plot and villain. It went Nemesis all the way though to Beyond with those types of films. Even Picard season 3 did it with Vadic. Movies like TMP V'ger is a robot or AI intelligence looking for its creator, or the one with the Whales part IV seem to deviate from the formula. Or V the search for God at the center of the universe.

I liked Star Wars a lot better when someone pointed out it's not sci-fi, it's fantasy in space. It's wizards and magic and things that 'just work'. Trek for hard science, Wars for lol space magic. I also kind of like Star Wars as a post-apocalypse/downfall: the the first and last three had a world where things barely work, it's all hodge-podge scrapped together, new tech is rare or impossible. I think part of what the prequels was missing was that kind of feeling: sort of like MechWarrior or Warhammer: Ancients built this tech, we can't make it anymore, so we salvage.

I am not a NuTrek hater but I think the biggest weakness of the modern iterations of Star Trek is that it has moved away from "hard science" and into the realm of, as you say, tech that "just works." Everything up to the Kelvin films felt plausible, like we hadn't reached that level of development yet but we someday would. But in modern trek, we have mushroom powered spaceships, emotional outbursts causing the destruction of the galaxy, and an impossibly bad understanding of genetic engineering. It may as well all be magic.

I think the biggest weakness of modern iterations of Star Wars is that they are completely driven by corporate synergy rather than a desire for compelling storytelling.

...actually, come to think of it, the biggest problem with both modern iterations of Star Trek and Star Wars is/was JJ Abrams. His style of "storytelling" has infected both franchises, and it doesn't look like that influence will be going away any time soon.
