Needs a balance, if the graphics are too shitty then the story would have to be top tier to want to keep going. If the story is shit, then you're skipping all the dialogue.
I love retro games.Retro games from the early to mid 80s are fairly popular on emulators, etc. Now look how often the (few) porn games from back then get downloaded. AFAIK they weren't very popular then, either.
I only recently heard of one from back then called X-Man (nothing whatsoever to do with X-Men. And no, not trans either.) It involves a playing as a nude guy with a large dick in a maze trying to get to a door while being chased by crabs, scissors and teeth - trying to do just what you think. Getting to the door leads to what passes for a sex scene. The maze part was supposed to be incredibly difficult, too.I love retro games.
But old porn games are shit.
Wiggling your joystick (no, not the one between your legs) to do some blocky sex animation in exactly the right rhythm to cum (on screen of course, because cumming IRL definitely isn't going to work)???
No thanks....
It's getting to a point where it won't get much better, especially given AI. If you look at what was good 40 years ago in the arcade would be terrible by today's standards for a so-so home computer game. It will eventually be good enough that an image/video from a game would be indistinguishable from real if it doesn't have a character doing anything that isn't possible.Graphics are nice to have but a good story is more important. Some of the classic games have good stories and graphics were up to date then. It was a different time. In 20 years, todays graphics will also not be state of the art.

The maps on RPGM look worse than what most did on the C64, at least the later ones.Yeah, even RPGM is years ahead of VGA graphics age. Let alone if you really want to go back to C64 or XT/CGA/EGA times.
But I think I disagree with you regarding AI. What I have seen so far in adult games is not that impressive. At the moment I strongly prefer a well made game with Daz rendered graphics over AI.
