How long is too long for a game to have an update...?

If your game is exceptional I'll probably be there for the next update no matter what. Most games aren't exceptional though, and if it takes longer than 4-6 months for an update its likely I'll have forgotten much of the plot/characters and be wary about downloading again and trying to remember how everything works.

At the point where you forget what is going on. So the more memorable the story the longer you have between updates.

Depends on the update size, big updates take time

Past the 6 month mark, I believe is when it becomes far too excessive.

Depends on the dev. I prefer to play updates, so 5-10 minute updates are more annoying than satisfying. While i prefer monthly updates, it makes more sense to wait 2-3 months for a real update instead of getting a quicky. But i drop games if the updates take even longer, i want to play, not to wait.

12 months, it's a real final threshold for me. Over a year and it's officially in "This is a scam" territory.

It depends, If the update takes 1 month but has fuck all new content that I don't care it only took 1 month its a waste of time to download and play it, on the other hand if it takes 6 months but has a metric fuckton of new content then im more than happy to wait the 6 months

No more than 4 months is acceptable, because I'm playing a lot of games at the same time.

3 months minimum - 6 months max (if the update is going to be worth it, I ain't waiting that long for a few dialogs and 5 mins of new renders)

There was games that have been updated after more than a year.
A good surprise for sure.
Sometimes game are abandoned and then they come back to life after years.

have a year, any longer and you cant expect people to keep this game in mind to check and pay for.

The most famous game is Milfy City, the developer didn't post an update for over a year and he still had over 4000 subscribers.

I give demos a chance but if nothing is seen or heard from again after a month or two, it becomes a forgotten memory, if that.

Just to add I like updates that add a good amount of content so every six months is preferred.

Nothing worse then re-downloading a 8GB game for just five minutes of content every month.

more than 6 months i start to question things, 3-4 months is standard.

Depends on the VN and the length and quality of the update. For Eternum, six months is fine; for the finale of Bare Witness, nearly 18 months was fine and approved by the patrons - they wanted the whole ending at once, so that's what the Dev's did. For a VN that's putting out a half hour of play every two or three months, that's kind of bullshit.
