Post apocalypse is honestly a good genre, the problem is we need different kinds of apocalypse, rather than yknow, zombie and nuclear, there are some anime with really good premises that pretty much confirm the concept, lot of potential there, not a lot of attention

High Fantasy is my go to a lot of the time. Just anything that can capture my imagination and let it run wild with ideas.

Realistic is probably my second choice, tied closely with science fiction and space.
