Did you learn english because of visual novels?

learned english mostly because of games but not porn or VN ones, more about emulated super nintendo RPGs. Also played a couple point and click adventure games for PC back then, it was frustrating not knowing what to do, it's already frustrating enough when you know what's being said, not knowing you feel like you never even had a chance to succeed.

My childhood dream was for my school to have been an mmo, but no.

I mostly learned English chatting with people in the old IRC, reading comic books and regular novels. Regarding Japanese, I'm reading ero manga now, listing anime and trying to read also amateur novels. I found out the grammar is easiest than trying to read professional books like published LN. The issue with Japanese VN is that you can't copy paste the text and searching kanji by kanji is a pain. But I hope soon I will be able to read them as well.

I learned it as a young teen in school, helped by movies, games & computers in general.

Respect to everyone who learned English through vns, I tried to learn Japanese through vns and its tough.

No, but I think it's (sometimes) a good sideeffect to improve your own english.

I'm not a native speaker but I've learned it in school and was already watching shows and reading books in english since I was a kid so AVN didn't really help leveling up my english skills :p And I'm not sure the AVN world is the best place to learn the language considering the engrish we have to suffer through sometimes!😝

i self taught my english with some normal Pc games.. but then there were these good old Porn-Flash games. those were brilliant.

I suggest an even more radical option - start learning foreign languages from children's comics.

Nope, back in the 90s that wasn't really an option, so I had to learn (or start learning) in school like most people. I did get into video games quite early and I'm fairly certain that they, along with books, tv shows and movies, actually helped me develop my vocabulary later on. VNs, in their current form, came too late to have had much of an impact.

not visual novels, but I learned because of video games in general.

Plenty of VNs have not the best english. Not a really good way to learn.

For me it was at school, but mostly on YouTube english video like Pewdiepie, that's probably thanks to him that I always liked english 🙂

I had a terrible english teacher in High School.
Music (the best learning materials come from the anglosphere) and JRPG forced me to improve my knolwedge of the language.

I started with games, then movies, and after VNs, its like im having fun and learning... best win win situation.

Kinda the opposite. I learned that a lot of devs that write in English don't speak it. You can tell because lots of mannerisms and expressions are wrong. Or worse, whatever translation program they use spits out horrible translations that don't make sense. One I see often is no native English speaker refers to female genitalia as their "sex." I know I'm not a good writer, but there have been times where I've wanted to reach out to devs of games I like and offer to help with the language.
