Dying probably, but not dead.

Going to the theater still has its special touch that can't be replicated, but the time when you went to the movies to see a movie like Harry Potter and the room is full of fans all super focused and into what they see... that's gone.

People lost respect for what it means to go to a movie theater, every now and then someone looking at their phone or talking loudly, the worst is when they bring babies... I understand that you don't have anyone to leave your baby with, but taking them to a movie theater is not only disrespectful to others, it's also irresponsible because the baby won't like being there.

With things like this and the ridiculously high prices for snacks, it's no surprise that people prefer to watch movies at home, it's not the same, but it's better than not being able to see the movie you paid a ticket for because everyone else is a jerk.

Anyway, something I would like to experience is drive-in theaters.

My last real memorable theatre experience was back when the Phantom Menace released. The hype was wild and remember getting in line just to buy tickets for a showing the same night, I went recently to watch the new captain america movie and it the first time in a looong time I've been. Since when did they install seats that recline fully btw? I haven't had a reason to go and haven't seen any movie trailer that made me feel the need to go out my way to watch it.

I only go to theaters if I feel the it'll enhance the experience, like amplifying the sound design and making visuals seem grander like Dune Part two for example, other than that I see no point.

To me? Pretty much. I won't go to a theater again. The last theater movie I saw was the latest "Superman" at the EVO here in San Antonio.
Firstly, let me say that the movie was utter garbage. The actor portraying Superman was a horrible choice, the script was a total failure, and
the acting was very VERY subpar. It would have been a better choice for Gunn to bring back Henry Cavill to portray Superman as opposed
to the guy they got to play him and the selection for Lois Lane wasn't any better.
Again, "Superman 2025" is probably the absolute iteration of Superman EVER produced. Hell it makes Brandon Routh's Superman Returns
look like an Oscar winning performance.
On top of a lousy movie, the theater had the shittiest food I've ever eaten in a long time. But what do you expect nowadays. My former
theater was the Alamo Drafthouse in New Braunfels, but it got closed during the first year of COVID, so it got bought out and rebranded,
but the wife and I went there once to see something and the food at the "new" theater was shit as well, so no more theaters.
I'll wait for it to come out on digital, DVD or Blu-Ray, but never EVER going to a theater again. Yep pretty much done with that shit.

END OF RANT!

no I think its changed but theres still big showings of people for the right movies in recent memory kpop demon hunters and the minecraft movies blew up

I pretty much stopped going to theaters after No Way Home released outside of a few horror movies my gf wanted to see and Godzilla Minus One.
I'm no longer interested in kids movies for the most part. And I skip movies that are computer animated when they should've been 2D like Smurfs and the SpongeBob sequels.
People are talking or on their phones the whole time.
45 minutes of commercials and trailers before the movie even starts
Movies come to streaming within weeks to months these days, VS the 6+ month wait for DVDs.
I have absolutely no problem at all with diversity/"woke" but it has led to a lack of targeted demographics in film. Everything has to appeal to everyone for maximum profit, making everything safe, stale, and samey.
An underlying fear of cancel culture, where even Princess Peach isn't allowed to be a damsel in distress
Production companies want big profit so they're afraid to try anything new (outside of artsy Oscar bait which is often boring)
Midbudget romcoms and comedies are basically nonexistent these days because they can't make profit from DVDs anymore.
The above two points have resulted in nearly everything being sequels, reboots, or spinoffs.
Superhero fatigue
I have endless other entertainment choices at any given moment

I do have a few movies I'm planning to see in theaters: Madoka Walpurgisnacht, Godzilla Minus 2, Shrek 5, and Adventure Time (and Saw 11 if it ever gets made) but that's all I foresee at the moment. Im not even caught up on Marvel anymore since they introduced all those canon TV shows.

Streaming was the final nail in the coffin, but it will be slow sad death that'll last a few more decades at best.

The owners have only themself's to blame with the insane prices, and not adaptating to modern times.

Hollywood contributed as well with filming nothing but remakes, reboots, an super hero movies.

I just don't understand what people get out of the theater these days. Granted, the local theaters around my area aren't really the latest and greatest, but my OLED tv looks better, and it seems like no one knows how to sound mix anymore so the sound systems at theaters are either wasted or are cranked entirely too loud. Add in the hassle of dealing with other people if you get a bad crowd, and the experience just doesn't have much to offer over staying home and watching it there in a few months.

It's a shame, I used to love going to the theater especially in the early movie pass days, but I go maybe once or twice a year now and find myself disappointed in the experience pretty much every time.

Haven't been to the movie theaters in almost a year, and i might not ever go again. So yeah I'd say they're pretty much dead.

considering the endless stream of trash and regurgitated slop that companies are producing like jurassic park #7, indiana jones re-reboot, superhero flop #150, and movies like Women Talking, no wonder the entire culture of watching movies on theaters died

Look at Superman it did about half as many ticket sales as Man of Steel. Is the theater dead. No. It's about half of what it was pre pandemic. You get less value for more money as well. Revenge of the Sith was on a crappy small screen in standard laser for 20 dollars a ticket. Gee I wonder why the theater was empty. It couldn't be because Disney booked bad venues, and did not promote the film. It's not a good sign for Star Wars 50th Anniversary in two years, watch them screw that up. Watch it be Maclunky 4K 2020 edit and not the original.

And All of Feige and Kathleen Kennedy's failures. They've made a mess of things. How many flops can they deliver until Iger says you're out of here.

When I go to the cinema with my family, I leave more money there than I earn in a day. Maybe once a year, but I prefer to watch movies at home where no one is rustling popcorn, a bag of chips, blowing their noses at me, and teenagers aren't making out.

If it's about culture, I'd rather spend my money on a concert. Or at the live theater.

I haven't been to a theater in about a decade. Watching at home is way too convenient to be bothered with the hassle of commuting for pre recorded entertainment.

I think by now you have to take a loan out to go and get snacks.

A big problem is that the film industry doesn't get, that people tend to use the most convenient option at all costs. If the paid service is better than piracy, then most are willing to pay.

Issue is that service is getting worse while pirating sites get better every day. Netflix used to offer the best service but now lacks content and becomes more expensive. By earning slightly more per user, they rappidly loose customers

My main problems are the idiot others, chatting, eating, going out and coming back...
If there would be a no eating no phone cinema, that would have a much better chance.

I’ve not been in years, but those cinemas that serve food that’s shown in the film look good

I fully agree with the no phone and no chatting, but as long as everyone stays seated, I don't see an issue with snacks

I have not been to the cinema willingly since I was a literal child - someone always has to drag me to it. And it's not like it's expensive for me to go. I can literally have dinner and walk to my closest cinema. But as the others said, waste of time. Bad movies that I'd not watch for free. And anything Disney - you'd literally have to pay me a lot to sit through. Or strap me down Clockwork Orange-style

Now that I think about it, the appeal of movie theaters we're always the games and arcades with my friends as a youngin, never the viewing experience itself.
