theatres are not ded, just have to pick and choose when to go. Like know for sure its gonna be a good movie rather than wait and watch when it comes to streaming
I don't know where you live, but in my Country the sector is in deep crisis. It all started years ago with the advent of multiplexes. In my native city, there were 3 movie theater old fashion style (really good quality), then they opened 2 multiplexes out of the city (outskirts) and in short time the old ones have closed. Now, also the multiplexes are in trouble. They survive only because they have other activities within them, like bowling and restaurant.

Nothing like paying a lot for tickets, then a lot for snacks, then a lot for a drink, then have a broken seat and only a half way decent movie.

Or someone tall sits right in front of you when (like me) you're only 5'3" tall. Or someone yaks the whole time or says what happens next, or you have to piss and miss something important, etc.

My Theater experiences for the last 10 or so movies have been pretty shit.

I don't watch Horror movies at the Theater with the exception of Alien:Romulus, recently. People literally laugh when nothing remotely funny happens. No scary moments, violence and bloodshed, no jokes, just something mundane like driving down a road. Like wtf, there was nothing even happening, why're these dumbasses laughing?

I watched a movie every weekend this Summer, and it was hot a fuck. Most movies were fairly packed, because I went during the first showings. Lots of people on their phones, guys either talking in non-hushed voices, or making predictions and spoiling things if they've already seen it. I'll maybe say something during a trailer, if I go with someone. That said; If you fuckers wanna talk don't go watch a movie and fuck it up for everyone else!

I also can't stand when people take their kids to R rated movies and then have to leave because they found the movie unacceptable. Taking a baby to a theater is also assholish.

Then concessions, which have always been expensive, I usually just tough it out, because I'm cheap.

All that being mentioned, I can handle a bad experience, as long as I don't end up sitting in shit, vomit, or someone's jizz. Which has happened to people I know.

I can't remember the last movie I went to see at the movie theater, maybe The Last Jedi, I'm not sure. That one killed my love of Star Wars

I haven't been in years because of prices, other life priorities. And because there haven't been any Star Trek or Star Wars films to see. No Superman movie, no nothing. Even James Bond is dead.

I'd just rather watch movies at home in the comfort of my living room. There's enough content around that I don't feel the need to go see every new movie.

Haven't been to a theater in years but I was under the impression that they pivoted from mass consumption to something like a middle-class luxury service. I imagine they'll continue on like like that for some years as selling out of the property is difficult due to the layout of the space.

Last time I was in a movie theater, most people didn't have internet access (July 1994.)

It is a dying industry but it's a shame, there are some movies that offer a completely different experience in the theater.

My favorite film from the last decade is Blade Runner 2049, if I could watch it in the theater again I would pay good money for it.

It's like bars/pubs, we used to socialize in bars and they did well, now we meet at home or at a park, less income for them so more expensive to go there

Lets sideline the whole technology aspect of movies and streaming etc...

I feel like theatres (public viewings) will always have a place in society. Yeah, the society got a little shy thanks to recent events and the decline in social skills/approachability of people.

It will probably be more of a niche entertainment angle because all the major players will pull out of the sector. But small cinemas will remain/reopen (after being pushed out by the big companies) and offer not just a movie but rather an entertainment aspect that people still enjoy. It will just not be a growth market but something that sustains itself.

Probably, I mean quality of movies has taken a nosedive, add to that streaming services will probably get you the same movie in your house within 2 or 3 weeks where you can watch in your big screen 4k TV with no additional cost.
It's not a difficult equation, if that's is sustainable in the long run is another discussion.

Another annoying thing - you can't skip the part at the beginning in most movies these days where they do an animation for every single company that had anything whatsoever to do with making the movie. I suspect in 20 years or so that part will take about an hour and will include the catering companies, security, places that sold the cars, etc.

Yeah definitely less people going to movie theaters every year.

Film has been dead for ages, however the Dune films are incredible.

It didn't come out in the last 5 years but Interstellar is also great example of a recent fantastic film.

Latest Deadpool I loved too, probably my favourite this year up to now even with it's problems I enjoyed.
