No Parkinsons, but I very much am that guitarist in my own way. Some stuff I just don't attempt. Sometimes it's not even fun to play. Part of aging (and any change, really) is grieving what you no longer have. Even to the point of handing over the world to the young, metaphorically and actually. We had our time to be one thing, now it's a time to be another.

Good thing we still have people uploading playthroughs on YouTube. So even if you can’t physically play anymore, you can still watch them and get a bit of that experience.

What are some things you’ve come to enjoy more as your tastes have matured? Like getting into philosophical books perhaps? For me, I’ve started to enjoy more text-heavy RPG video games since my attention span’s improved with age.

You’re talking to the wrong person when it comes to kinetic novels. I really can’t stand them, especially the ones with zero choices where it’s just click, click, click. They might have a great story, but at that point I’d honestly rather just watch someone else play through it than sit there clicking and reading myself.

Completely agree on youtube. Whether speedruns, high-level League of Legends play, etc. Lot of gaming content that I'm glad exists, but only want to watch lol. Funny you mention long rpg's and attention span. I'm actually much less likely to delve into one game for a long time. Whether learning systems, getting good at mechanics, or just playing through 100hrs of an amazing rpg. Nah, gimme a roguelike, something turn-based, something I can play for an hour every day for a week, then forget about for a few months, come back to and be able to pick up right where I left off. As far as taste in general.... I'm an atypical person overall. Lucked into good taste, big ideas, etc when I was young. If anything, it's about appreciating things on new levels with repeated exposure. Books, movies, music, whatever. Same taste, just... deeper? And with more of a knowledge base to apply. It's one thing thinking about philosophy over bong rips when you're young, another once you've actually done the homework plus lived experience.

I’m the complete opposite—I like games that are quite challenging, ones that require learning, experimenting, reading, and failing before you can truly master them. That’s why one of my favorite genres is colony simulation, where even small planning mistakes or ignorance of the game mechanics can lead to everyone dying.

Even in RPGs, I love skill trees and customizable builds. I adore the skill tree in Path of Exile (especially in PoE2), and I even love simpler ones like the one in Guild Wars 2, not to mention the one in Skyrim with the Ordinator mod.

That whole sense of improvement that comes from learning is something I adore and that has been lost over time in more modern games. Learning to do something in the game not because you unlock a skill but because you learned through trial and error is wonderful. Like learning to parry in Dark Souls—it’s not an unlockable skill; it’s something you can do right from the start, but it requires practice.
In colony simulators, that’s taken to the extreme, which is why I love them.

And even though I sound like a hardcore player who loves a challenge, I actually prefer laid-back games—going at my own pace and doing things the way I like. That’s why you won’t see me playing a lot of multiplayer games; even though I really like MMORPGs, I usually play solo without looking for clans or groups.

Oh colony management, strategy, simulation... those are VERY much my jam. X-com, Rimworld, Subnautica, Factorio, etc... Good good shit. So many hours, just spread out over a long time lol. I just don't learn through brutal trial/error. I start on easy, get completely familiar with the system and all its parts, then figure out my own difficulty/challenge. Perfect run savescumming can be very chill and a lot of fun. It's all just legos to me.
