I second using Brave browser or any third party browser that has a built in ad/cookie blocker, but for me it's more about user experience than security.

That being said; my pc and Microsoft accounts are under an alias and linked to a secondary email. My IP is still vulnerable, but I try not to think about it.

Do you use a VPN or have any recommendations?

I use NordVPN, I have no complaints. If you go with Nord, just make sure to disable their auto-renewal so you can take advantage of promotions when resubscribing.

When using a VPN, make sure you understand what it does. A VPN won't necessarily make you anonymous to the sites you visit, but mostly avoids your ISP knowing what you're doing on the internet.
For instance, if you log in to google through your VPN, then google knows that you're you.
If you log in to google without a VPN, you forget to clear your cookies and then visit google through the VPN... Google still knows who you are, even if you don't log in.

I suggest using two browsers, and dedicating one to only use with VPN, the other without. This way you avoid cross contamination with cookies, persistent data, and accidental logins. It will also make it more difficult for companies like google, Facebook & Discord to use browser fingerprinting.

Main reason why people get "pwned" is they use the same password and similar usernames across many different websites, so if one gets hacked/leaked all their accounts are compromised.

Another option here is to get a domain name with a catchall so every account can be registered with a different email address. Or, make use of google's + functionality; eg: [email protected] will work on most websites and will be delivered to [email protected]
It doesn't negate your advice to pick a strong password, it's just an added layer of protection against automated systems.
And, about passwords, the suggestion to use special characters is overblown. A long and rememberable password is much better than a short but complex one. Nobody is going to guess: "Th1s is my Passw0rd!"

(Of course the problem with this is that there are quite a few websites that insist on you having a combination of lower/upper case characters and numbers AND special symbols in your password, ON TOP of having a hidden limit of 20 characters or less. All gigantic flags of NOPE security wise, but depressingly all too common.)
