This aligns somewhat with my own thoughts, I think it's kind of difficult to translate an anime art style into 3d, especially for an indie dev. It can absolutely be pulled off, game studios in Japan, Korea & China have become fairly good at emulating that kind of eastern art style into 3d games, but you need more than good 3d models to successfully sell the effect.
true! i did see a video on youtube of someone making a pretty decent 3D anime figure. however i think the reason why they pulled it off was by making the face practically 2D on a 3D head, and weirdly enough it worked

Do you mean like Honey Select? Yeah, no, not for me.

I judge all games case by case, no matter the art style or engine.

I'm not wild about anime/manga style art to begin with, it's frankly baffling to me to use it for porn. I'm a straight-down-the-middle representational pleb.

In theory I like it. But I've never seen it done well. Like, the character designs aren't interesting, or everything blends together too much - like, there isn't enough definition. the colours are off, the lightings too bright etc - and it makes for very boring images imo.

A game with a modern Final Fantasy art style would be amazing

Like with all games there is a good way of doing it and a wrong way of doing it. Mostly if the story is engaging and the art (whatever style) is above a certain threshold then it doesn't matter too much.

So long as its consistent

depends all on the story and quality of the game. art style alone will not make or break a good AVN.

Pre-rendered 3D anime art is great.

the problem for me is their is no in-between with it its either good or awful

depends but like most 3D games are still 2D in some form.

absolutely love it, just the majority of time it is censored which I don't love, rip
