Damn, I haven't been on ATF in years but hearing about it closing down it's pretty sad especially since it seems like it all happened because of some power hungry weirdo. Since Vis said that he will close it down in the next few months, maybe he will have time to reconsider and find a way to keep it alive. It would be a shame to see that place go down like that.

I DLED then posts in pdf there are 2 if you read it the individual in question stole a 2025 database of everyone's shit as ransom do what i say or else situation and also got down under ma in there (think of the children people) apparently threaten cops.


So if you see it back up watch the fuck out it could be just that user with the 2025 backup do not be the fly in the web.

Yeah... I thought the same. What baffles me is the cost of running ATF, though. It's one thing to say "I wanna run the joint". It;s another to shoulder 20K/year in costs while running the place. Did the guy who wanted to take over realize this? ATF is a huge site. I highly doubt he could handle it proper.

I doubt ATF will live on because a copy of the site may or may not exist. Too risky to continue with a knife like that on your neck. You can't trust a dude making threats then make a 180 saying "yeah I deleted the copy I made, promise"

Couldn't they solve that by just migrating the content to a new site? People would have to create new accounts but since the site isn't closing down immediately they would have time to warn the users and let them move to the new site.

That cost is due to the content many host providers add extra cost when NSFW is involved they know they got you over the barrel so the will charge more.

the problem there is that the database itself is a threat all on it's own and as long as there's a site to blackmail with it, he's probably going to keep trying, or worse, actually search through the database for any PII anyone was foolish enough to risk on DM's or a staff forum or something, and start using that instead of using the whole thing as a blunt instrument.

that would require a lot of time, effort, and money. and would give about the same result as what is happening with the users moving to other sites like this

They could but now it would be even more matters of trust. Teaching the successor. Giving deep secrets on how the site works. Entrusting the successor with this knowledge and treating all users with respect (protecting personal information / privacy). Funding. A ton is involved and clearly Vis wants off the treadmill. I don't think passing the baton is simple here. You need to find someone who embodies all this and more.

As a former uploader its all done manually on here LC ha no local hosting of storage less legal ramification Lc relies on file upload sites those sites also have content limits and in the past blocked type files and or just got shutdown.

As far as I understand John who fucked Vistarr over had almost the same role as Apollo has here Vistarr got sick and needed someone to handle things like backing up the database, and he knew John for quite a while before (John also helped with DDOS protection etc.).

Some people at ATF are pretty judgemental to Vistarr for trusting John, but honestly reliable people with technical know-how are pretty rare, especially with things like Xenforo. But there's also no way to really protect against it. Sometimes you just need help and you trust the wrong people who you've known for years.
