I started with Akira and Fist of the Northstar, later Ghost in the Shell. Yes, I'm old. I'm not really watching new stuff anymore either, except when it's extraordinary or gaming related (I watched one Punch Man and no Game no Life for example). I miss the 80's/90's style. I also watched and liked Serial Experiments Lain and Neon Genesis Evangelion to give more examples. There was a kind of seriousness/adultness to the animations that is hard to put into words, and that I find sorely lacking in most productions of the past roughly 20 years.

Katainaka no Ossan - Really good art style, nice atmosphere.

Kowloon Generic Romance - Try watching this without reading about it, its great for going in blind.

My top 3 honestly changes on the daily, especially as I sometimes forget about shows that had a massive impact on me.

For now though:
1: HxH
2: Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
3: Bofuri

I don't have a top 3 for hentai, but those anime are currently my top 3 anime.

Someone was talking about Cowboy Bebop before the rollback of the site. A show I have on everything, but VHS and I haven't a full set of the laserdiscs. But I do have the remastered Japanese DVD no English whatsoever. And I have the Funi Blu-ray. There is no DNR free version worldwide. The Blu-Ray is the best version of the show. That is an excellent series so is Outlaw Star. My anime tastes and choices go back a long while. I can't recommend new stuff because I don't watch all that Isekai shit. I've watched some. Anime from the 60s to the early 2000s was great. It's hilarious how when I think of best new anime, I think of Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star and they are decades old. late 90s. Shows that I'm just an old man set in my ways.
