Above has it right, they're incredibly uncreative... that said, the fact that some of them manage a solid 2/10 puts them a smidge above your average random connect rp partner so... sometimes it's better than nothing :/

Treating the chat bot more like an interactive story maker where you are in charge of directing can be fun. Sometimes the ai leads you to a direction you weren't even planning to go and changes the whole interaction. Taking the chat bot as a conversation partner or something sounds dull and pointless.

Some of them work fine, especially the unfiltered ones. For a long storyline you are making, the ai tends to still get confused and having to constantly remind it what happened and is going on gets tiresome.

Instead of chatting with one, I've used uncensored bots to create scenes or pitch story ideas back and forth. Surprisingly rewarding.

Great character on a great model can be a really exciting experience.

You get the right setup (ie sci-fi/modern/medieval, family/school/trip), interesting character(s) and good story.
On bad or mediocre models (which is the norm sadly), this is more like "meh", but still better than the average text game.

On the good models you basically get the challenging roleplay partner, or better yet, spicy Game Master and a slew of the good characters.

If you're chasing a good, satisfying short story culminating in, ekhm, culmination, you can easily find the character that matches your preferences however they are. It's also possible (albeit challenging) to find amazing model which will then lead you to the climax the way you want.

It can be really satisfying and about as good as a human roleplay partner.
Of course it won't replace human-to-human interaction, but as a someone with profiles on one of the large roleplay sites, much more often than not (95%+) players don't want any interactions beside roleplay, so..... it's pretty much like RP with a bot.

If you want to dip your proverbial finger in the good AI roleplay, try c.ai -- they have by far the best freemium model and allow for the free voice model creation -- if you live in the long distance relationship with someone, that may be a gamechanger for you two.
If you have a reasonably good GPU in your PC, try Backyard.ai for the local models -- now, in late 2024 they're no longer clunky and terrible, some are actually pretty good.

I'm not sure if it's allowed to post the link to the large(st) database of characters, so I won't, but just look up the "tavern character" - tavern is the type of the character card, they usually come in the form of png or json file.

Other than "chat" cards and models, there are also scenario / story mode models, but the most consistent ones are slightly harder to set up and navigate.

And lastly - concerning image generation: other than thousands of the online services you can find free model on civitai and use them with the local instance of Stable Diffusion UI (by automatic1111) or any other ui. There are hundreds of youtube channels covering it in depth.

I find a great fun in playing with my favourite characters.
It takes a bit of time to set it up right, but at the end you get a really great CYOA with the character(s) you want.

I tried Backyard.ai and it's ok. It doesn't really ever surprise me and it feels hard to get a usefully descriptive sex scene out of a character. I guess that's just were AI is. the POV roleplay with a person that generally understands what my kinks are but doesn't really use that to the greatest effect.

I can't figure out how to import characters from the character tavern sight assuming that's even possible. Those seems like much more directly and explicitly sexual characters rather than the character galley backyard has which seems like I have to derail the character a bit to get into sexual stuff.

It depends on the platform, when I started out, it wasn't rewarding at all due to the site I was using being a little heavy handed on filtering. Five messages in and it'd brick itself. Now, using things like SillyTavern with a decent LLM or just using ChubAI with a openai proxy, that's rewarding, it's pretty much whatever you want it to be, good or bad. No matter how extreme, vile, or morally reprehensible it may be, it's doable. The only catch is that you need to have a good character card

Some AI's have a rewrite function where you can regenerate a response, but it may take, 2, 3, 4 rewrites to get a coherent output. I am curious to know if a paid one is any better.

I've seen people talk about these chat bots that will engage in some amount of sexual content and I'm really curious where these things are and how people feel about them. My assumption is this is just single player sexting and I just can't see the enticement to something like that service. Since it's just a chat AI on the other side I assume it can't send you images in real time because that'd increase the load on whatever these things are run on and good AI renders are usually behind a paywall so if it's just text, isn't that just really boring? The few times I've tried chat bots it feels like the biggest struggle of my life to hold a one sided conversation with someone who just won't give you anything and I imagine this is even more true in a situation where the goal is some amount of sexual gratification or excitement.

I used think the same thing, but that was before I really started looking into things. after I discovered that there were actual sites and even an application that were free and not just freemium, after doing that I discovered that there was an ability to use these AI chat/rp things, and use them in a way that allows for an experience that is personalized.

"Temperature" of the roleplay is partially determined by the model you use.
Local models you use with Backyard.AI are usually limited and quite stupid, but some are not the most terrible (namely Mythomax Kimiko 13B, Llama 3 Ultra Instruct 8B, or my recent favourite Fimbulvetr v2 11B). Usually go with the biggest you can fit.

If you felt so underwhelmed by your experience so far, try using other recommended models that fit on your GPU.

And of course grab some good character to play with (although for the basic test/roleplay, characters offered by Backyard.ai are good enough).

Other than that try c.ai, because it seems that you draw the conclusion about the *WHOLE* landscape (which is larger and deeper than you seem to think) from the one meh experience with the local model (which are dumber than even average hosted model).

Cai has a great model FAR outperforming many of the competitors (and will be more consistent that most of the local models).
I agree it's heavily censored and railed, but it's great to see how good it actually may look like.

Previously I'd recommend yodayo but I don't think it's any good anymore.
But OK,for SFW or mildly NSFW openai may be better.

Other than that personally I use paid models via openrouter proxy on SillyTavern. The best experience IMO.
