discussion Do you prefer to play games on release day or wait a while?

unless its something i really want to play (last was bg3) or a interesting indie game (waiting for hollowknight silksong), i normally wait for a game to become deeply discounted in a few years. the reasons why are $70 price for new games that are broken, bug riddled, filled with micro-transations, ugly character models, etc. plus i got a backlog in my steam library that i need to work on anyways.

But if that's the topic, yeah. I'm not an Early Access fan, except for some very special stand outs.

Ahhh Gotcha. I think I'm still I'm still of the sweet and naive mindset that Indies are the ones in Early Access... Which isn't quite the case these days.

Nowadays we have large companies doing this all the time, the worst thing is that there are games that have been in early access for years.

More than how good it is, it's more a question of how finished it is as such (I'm talking about normal games, not XXX), look at Hogwarts Legacy, I really want it, but every time I'm about to give up I see how they fix things where all the players bother or add functions and I think I can wait longer to see if they finish polishing it or adding content, for example they recently added the photo mode, it's not a big deal, but it is an advance that tells me that it is better to wait.

Even more basic, IME reviewers (both professional and customer) will gush over a steaming pile of crap if it was advertised heavily.

Bethesda proudly presents how modders do most of the work and release a skyrim game whose improvements are mods XD

i always wait, i don't like jumping on the gun, wait and see how it plays out, especially if it's a triple AAA game, often i would just pirate it, i would pay for indie, IF the game were good.

I have found i wait a while for really new releases. And always come back to new updates of games that really got me invested.

Typically release day, the only exception of recent is Stellar Blade. I have it installed but the lack of photo mode has me waiting for it to come later. I know I will be taking just ass loads (pun INTENDED) of pictures while playing.

Depends on the type of game and who is developing it like if its a game that will age better with community support or if it doesn't matter

I wait because im cheap and discounts drop later and because these days games drop half finished so a few updates rolling out typically means the game is better by the time I pick it up, a buddy of mine paid 100 dollars for the deluxe version of anthem on release and that bombed so bad it became a cautionary tale

I'm playing on the release, if I liked it, I'm waiting for updates, if not, then maybe I'll give you another chance in a year or two years

If it is a game that I am super excited for, I'll usually grab it after a day or two. Last game I bought on day one was Elden Ring and I did not regret it at all. Will definitely be getting the dlc.
