Aight, gonna say this once and that's it.
Not all devs have their sweet time developing games, they're having some IRL stuff to handle too. Not all devs are hotshots and have a dedicated team working on titles, graphics, script, writing etc. And don't tell me about coding, more complex the story is, more complex is the code running under the hood.
Not only that, pressures from payment solutions (Vishit and BastardCard) and ooga booga governments (like the United Pissdom) are very, very scared at them nude pixels so they swinging heavily banning safe to consume materials and even artist themselves because some idiot thought that this is too problematic and not other serious topics (such as THE FUCKING WEATHER)
Then there are devs like YandereDev or HentaiWriter that are lazy as fuck and they stretch development as much as possible so they can continue milking people.
I'm going to tell you a little story, I was once hired to develop a fighting video game, simple, politically themed, at that time I didn't have much idea about video game development since my specialty is web development.
I offered to do it in Unity because it was the only engine I knew, it took me literally ONE WEEK to finish the game, functional mechanics, a scenario, character designs, menus, give me one more week and I would make you an options menu with language selection and volume and resolution controls, it was so extremely stupid that I was surprised by the ease with which I managed to make a fully functional game of that style. This was when I started thinking "I'm either a genius or most developers are just lazy", and I'm not the kind of person who likes to stick with the most egocentric idea.
On another occasion, I formed a translation group for Doki Doki Literature Club mods, I took the role of leader and I had to touch code many times, I learned how Ren'py worked at the time thanks to it and I realized that 95% of developers who use Ren'py DO NOT EVEN use 50% of what that software is capable of, to the point where if I started to implement improvements in the mods, my team's translations were going to end up being mods of mods.
My field is not video games, I am a fullstack developer who works with websites, and I personally believed that video games would be something much more complicated. Of course I know that there are more complex developments than what I described here, but that is no excuse for taking 5 years to make a game that lasts 5 hours, there is literally no excuse for that.
Inb4: "Then why don't you make your own games?", as I said, my area is web development and I already make a living from that, I have no reason to leave my area of specialty.
