Why don't you financially support devs you really like?

I always try support the devs that have a proven run of their AVN and have shown to not be an asshole. I would support all the ones that fit that criteria, if I could afford it. The asshole devs can fuck off. If I get disappointed by a dev, well they earned what they got, but they get no more.

All the money goes to assets / commissioning assets, I generally only buy games at 75-90% discount (depending on price) and probably played Oblivion / Morrowind etc 10 years "late".

Paying monthly 5-10 euros would add up way too much for a game in the end. Not that I have hardware to run anything recent with acceptable fps.

Personally, I don't create a game for the money, I do it above all for my personal pleasure. Getting ideas out of your own head is like therapy for me. And having people who give out of their pocket for me, even 1 euro, is very motivating! I always have the reaction of a little kid of 10 when I have a new contributor! It's a form of recognition for a job and no matter the amount, it's always a joy. It's normal that not everyone can give, but luckily there are some. THANKS

Interesting subject.

Let me first touch on those I don't pay. Factors include:
Greedy - Those I feel that drag their content out for the soul purpose of getting more money. Meaning updates are sparse or the content is miniumal.
Bad Content - This can go several ways
Story is bad
Renders are of poor quality
Choppy animations
Multiple games at one time - This is rather obvious. I have do have one creator I follow and Pay (Exception to the rule for me) but right now they're not working on the one the game that got me to subscribe to them in the first place.
Pay scale - Monthly to me is to much when you consider a normal full game is about $60 which if I pay $5 a month that works out except that in my experience with VNs that it take most creators at least 2 to 3 year to complete a well rounded VN. I personally would rather use itch.io an pay for a completed product or at the very least paying after deciding where or not I like the game. Al least I am only paying once. Good example, I Followed and played A Petal Amongst Thorns after the project was complete I bought the game off itch.io.
TRUST! - How many abandon games have we seen that were good. I understand circumstances and all but I don't want to give my money to something that may not even be completed.
Paid Bonus features - Like Gallery or other feature not in the game. Why not add loot crated too. If a person is subscribed or on discord there is probably a special teirs for special renders. I don't fell like there need to be a gallery of renders you have to pay for.
Too many creator I like - I pay 3 consistently but I also support others on Icth.io or through other means. I how ever would be broke if I pay everyone I liked.

I personally find that I support those that I am really into there content. That doesn't mean just seeing nude scenes. They have to have the ability to tell a story, even if is the same story just told in a different and unique way.

That is all I have for now.

There are also other ways to support creators. Talk about stories on the forums, put up a banner, leave a great comment. It's just as nice as receiving money.

I subscribe to 2 or 3 devs on SubscribeStar (a very few on Patreon) for a month or two -- more if they're constantly turning out product. I'm keeping Dumb Koala (the comics page) because she has new content all the time. I'm currently subscribed to 13 Games but may turn it off until the next update. About $3/month for fun times is not that bad,

(I generally try a game using the free links and subscribe if for a month if I like it. Gotta keep the devs fed so they can make new stuff!)

Simple really I'm retired and disabled living on a pension. With the cost of insurance, medicine, rent, and grocery's leaves me with little income.

Honestly, I don't support any dev's for one reason only - keeping my anonymity. I def have played several AVN's and felt that the dev deserved some moneys from me since I've had hours of fun and enjoyment from their game. But where I live (a northern europe country) it is pretty hard to transfer funds anonymously at all.

I agree with the one above me on the anonymity part, and I also believe that developers should receive support for their project if you as a player enjoy it. I view it as simply paying for the game they provide. With that said there is a very serious downside to this type of support. An example:

I supported DonTaco on Patreon because I loved his BigLongComplex game and really saw the potential of it. He was also active with feedback and staying on top of updates. And then....

BLC did not received any updates for over a YEAR (!) and then gets ignored because the dev is now working on two other but very similar small games AND some engine prototype or whatever, and then suddenly decides to remake BLC in THE SAME ENGINE with THE SAME CHARACTERS etc etc etc. Im not gonna go on and on, this is not the point. The point is, I had at that time supported him on Patreon for 7 months. That is a total of 103 EURO (converted from my currency), which is the total price for 2 AAA games. That is a lot of money, in my opinion, for a porn game that wasnt even finished nor will be in any close future.

This also opens up another can of worms for me. When a dev gets fairly big (DonTaco cashes in, currently, almost 2000 Euro a month!) the majority of them tends to just lean back, watch the money roll in, give a ton of empty promises and then watch their fans/simps fight their battles for them in the comment sections.

So in short, no, I won't be supporting any more devs because I feel waaaay too many of them are simply abusing the support systems.

And just as a last one, this was not to specifically hang the dev DonTaco out as this big bad dev, I am fully aware that I might not know everything that goes on behind the scenes. But he was my only personal experience, so the only one I could reference. But I have seen and heard many other devs going down this route.

You can add to your list those who live in the countries currently under economic sanctions. Even if they want to support, they simply cannot due to restrictions imposed by the US and their allies.

I did support all the devs I like but back in February I lost my job and since I haven't been able to find another one yet and my savings is gone I'm currently not able to. However when my luck changes and I manage to get back to work I plan on going back to supporting those guys.

I really dislike subscription models for goods. I am okay with it for services, but games are not services. So the common way of support through Patreon or SS is nothing that I would even consider. I bought all the normal games I enjoy (or didn't enjoy). Still I don't financially support developers of porn games. I simply don't want to have my payment information associated with porn. Porn is something that is not looked on favorably by wide parts of society. Non vanilla kinks can even get you in legal trouble. Society is very fluid in defining what those kinks are. Not long ago homosexuality was kink for that you could end up in prison or get you castrated. To this day there are countries where you get a death sentence for it.

I would like to support some developers of interactive erotic art, but I like my freedom and balls more. If you could walk into a games store and pay in cash, I wouldn't hesitate.

Well, I do, sometimes with one time donations, some with monthly ones, depends. There are also Devs that got onto my personal blacklist for shit they have done, then I don't, but thats because of their behaviour then.

I am in a very very limited income but I do support 5 devs. Though its only a small amount I do what I can. I also occasionally buy their games on steam.

I do the same thing I support only a few of the massive library I have : WVM/MNM/Little Regina/Reunion/Troubled Legacy
And when the game are available on steam I buy them to do them on my Steam deck.

A blacklist? Sounds like a good idea for a thread. There are those who have no buisness being a game developer, too many devs now in days think it's okay to exploit gamers and that video games only exist for quick dirty money.

After reading that notification here about Itchio helping Australian authorities by handing over info on users. I can see that as a legit reason not to support a dev

I did not see anything itch.io specific only the basic fear mongering they are going after supporters.

There are other means to get access to the account, like saved password.

Pretty simple why most don't support is $$$. Too many games to support them all. Personally I will support a game that has proven delivery. Light of my Life (this last release took forever but was everything I hoped). Straightened Times, the list could go on.
There are way too many devs out there that release a game and just milk it without ever delivering what people are looking for.
So many games build up to the point where its about to deliver what people want then the developer abandons the game. I wouldn't back a game in the hopes a developer will eventually release the content I'm looking for. I would support a developer that has already released something good to fund them for what they delivered so that they can make more.
How many devs do people see that make version 1, 2, 2.2... Then release a new game hoping for more supporters and end up with 3 or 4 in progress and never deliver any of them.
Some do of course... But they feel like they are a small percentage
