Is the "time online" in your profile the overall amount of time you have been online?

Sometimes I lose track of time and spend many hours playing games, I even repeat games that I have already finished.

Does anybody know how is it measured? Only if the site is in an active tab in the foreground, or just by having the site open in one of the other 3000 tabs I have? Because my time online is waaay out of proportion
