Backdraft, Willow, Ransom, Cinderella Man, A Beautiful Mind. Someone already mentioned Apollo 13, Ron Howard was a great director even if he isn't so much now.

Gattaca (1997) - thought provoking sci-fi drama ,
Equilibrium (2002) - a slick dystopian sci-fi action flick,
and Training Day (2001) - Magnificent crime thriller with an amazing performance by Denzel Washington.

waaaaay before Peter Jackson made the LOTR trilogy, we had this obscure little fantasy gem.
if i had to describe it now, it would be "we have lord of the rings at home" .

Blade Runner. It is just so beautiful. Really poignant story for today, cool 80s style, beautiful music by Vangelis and just really memorable. I can also concur with the suggestion of Alien above, though I would maybe be tempted to go for Aliens instead.
