If I had to pick one film to show anyone, it would be Kung Fu hustle because it has everything. I would say Lord of the Rings but you would need to watch them all.

I'm surprised I haven't seen Cloud Atlas listed here yet. And I think Spirited Away is the only Ghibli film mentioned so far, so I'm going to add in Princess Mononoke to get some better representation!

Gonna go a little weird on this one but Wristcutters: A Love Story (2006) has always been a favorite, odd, dark, but strangely optimistic. Though obvious content warning for people who're a little bothered by that title. It goes basically where you think it does right at the start.
