If it wasn't for the story-related fetishes you get to vicariously experience in porn games I'd just look at live action porn instead. Pictures of anime and 3dcg women don't do anything for me on their own, unlike real women. oh wait in a vn, im pretty sure even people who say one thing, sometimes try others. think it depends on the mood. for me, if the story sucks but the lewds are good, then obviously im there for the lewds and ignore the story eventually. but i always try new VN with attention to the story first. at the same time, i can not name a single VN that i havent dumped after it milked dropping lewd scenes. theres a difference between building up anticipation and understanding that you'll lose some people when the titular LI is finally concurred. but even in stories where girls are banged constantly people keep coming back. so maybe its the devs fault for making one LI more important than the others and building up the tension so bad that people stop caring about the story. they ought to learn how to tell a story with middle ground, or something. anyway id say more but my morning coffee is doing upsetting things to my gut. im off

I think that like it or not, a large part of an actual sex scene is the context around it. Yeah hot sex scenes are hot, and that will always be true. But add to that scene a smoldering tension, a pre-established relationship, a little bit of history, and a touch of emotion, and the scene takes a whole new light. It isn't always necessary, especially not in every porn game. But if a game strikes a good balance of good story telling and hot sex scenes, then it is second to none.

This 100%. If I'm playing a VN, I expect some kind of story. A strong story can make the reward of sex (in whatever form it comes in) even better. If the story sucks, the scenes better be incredible, otherwise I'll get more enjoyment out of a touching simulator... or IRL porn.

For me it's a really hard thing to balance. Story is essential, but the pacing and delivery need to be really good. If it's just walls of text I tend to start skipping here and there until I miss most of the story. My bad, I know, but most of the games aren't really that well written. But luckily there are those rare gems.
