people were encouraged to fuel their actions with emotion instead of thinking, so every opposition became a personal attack. they want things to be black and white, if its not good then it has to be bad. compromise meant conceding which meant letting the enemy win. every opinion became a hill to die on, "if i change my stance, i lose".
