What Do You Think About Slow Burns?

Slow burn makes me think dragging on (probably because the dev is also making slow progress)

I keep playing a game when every part of it is interesting. Otherwise I skip ahead with cheating or editing. I won't waste hours on 80% boring stuff.

Slow burn games work as long as the storyline keeps up your interest (such as MisFits). However, there are some slow-burners that just drag along, with no real sense of direction or end-goal (sorry - can't remember which ones, because I've deleted them).

If I start a completed game it's fine to immerse myself in a good story, getting to know the characters, before getting to the real sexy stuff. If I have to wait half a year per update and see no sexy time I will be frustrated (Innocent Witches comes to mind). Doesn't mean I won't play the game, just means I will wait till the game is sizable enough to not frustrate me (depending on update frequency that can be till it's finished).

It can be slow but if the story is gripping then it doesn't matter.

The surround story must be superb to keep a slow burn AVN from being insta delete.

I generally prefer them but only if the content is there/complete enough to back it up, slow burn becomes a bit too slow if the climax doesn't happen for another few years accounting for dev time

As someone who has inexplicably fallen in love of CeLaVie Group games such as My New Roomate, My First Love, and the ongoing My Early Life, I've really found a love for slow burns that really take their time with very incremental corruption/seduction. Now those particular games are by no means perfect, I could go on and on about certain frustrations or peculiarities I find with them all, but I've played every single one that the devs have made and I'm always excited for a new update. I believe its due to the way they really nail having you pushing the girls' boundaries over and over again until it eventually becomes normalized, and then you start working on the next boundary.

My Early Life, for example, has just started getting into the real good stuff and despite it taken several months to get there, and I've found that the pay offs are incredibly satisfying. Being able to look back at the early game and seeing just how little you could do with the girls how rocky your relationships were and comparing it to where you are now is weirdly fulfilling and I'm not sure I can really compare it to any other games I've played before.

So, what do you generally think of slow burn games? How slow is too slow? Is the pay-off usually worth the amount of time put into getting there? Is there an issue of a game starting to lose its magic once the good stuff finally gets going?
You've convinced me to go back to celavie games and try out my early life. That is a good description of gameplay you've given for it

So to actually answer your question, yes i like slow burn games. But there's a fine line between slow burn and god this game has nothing going for it. this is where a good story line and a bit of gradual seduction comes in

I think i am told old and impatient for slow crap.

It also doesnt help that slow burn tents to just drag out conversations way longer then neccery.
So many games take 5 min to have a 5 seconds conversation.
Its a crime against effeciency!

The buildup can be half the fun, but it needs to be done well, if the story is boring or there's no anticipation/flirting I'm going to get bored and start skipping, and once I start skipping, I'm probably going to skip through the whole game so I can start on a different game that may hold my interest better.

As long as it continues to be interesting and keep you entertained with an eventual good payoff then I don't mind a slow burn.

It depends:
  • Actual slow burn would often be better called romantic. A romantic AVN that is well done is a very good thing even if it doesn't provide instant gratification.
  • Slow burn that is not really romantic because it's more like gradual corruption or similar, is also a good thing if well done.
  • Slow burn that is not well done is just a nuisance on the way to the porn, similar to grind. If you are into it, it's fine, but most aren't.
  • Some people refer to certain story-heavy games as being slow burn because they misunderstand their purpose. A game like Eternum or My Bully is my Lover is primarily about the story, not about sexual gratification. Sex comes if and when it makes sense for the story, just like in a mainstream film. Except that just like in a mainstream film, it tends to come a little more often / a bit more early than the story actually requires. Just not blatantly so. This kind of 'slow burn' is unequivocally good.

I'm fine with it as long as you can tell it's thought out and knows where it's going and not just padding stuff out to make the story seem longer

I find that I do enjoy a slow burn game as long as it is written well but I can understand the hesitancy other players feel about such projects this isn't exactly a stable market and you can often find yourself getting well burned (pardon the pun).

I like slow burn VNs but they have to be well written and compensate with a lot of teasing. I actually like teasing and erotic scenes without anything explicit, but they must be done well. For explicit sex I have real porn. In a VN I like to see different personalities and developing some sympathy or interest for a character. There are also good fast pacing VNs, by the way. If a story is well written, fast pacing or slow burn is not an issue.

The problem I see in many VNs is the lack of effort to build a non-linear story that has some originality and gets the attention of the player. To be fair, many VN projects are just a hobby for the developers so we cannot pretend too much.

if the story and the renders are good, i'm good, but i know wankers don't like them

The thing about "Slow Burns" is that the story has to be both interesting and creative, otherwise it will lose the reader's interest. But most importantly, the VN has to be well written. I find nothing is more frustrating than a clever story ruined by bad writing
