I think I know the reason. Presumably, most of the games you play are Ren'Py games. Ren'Py games by default start with all sound channels at 100%. Developers should probably fix this by shipping games with a configuration file that sets a reduced volume (and otherwise keeps the defaults), but for some reason Ren'Py games almost always ship without such a file.

it depends on the game. if it has nice background music/ sounds i leave it on low but if they don't fit in i just mute them

I think you're missing out then. Good sound does add a lot to games. However there aren't many games that actually have good sound. I never mute the sound. I adjust the volume and if the sound is good I put on headphones.

I keep the sound off most of the time tbh, but as you said, there are some with great music (mr. dots)

Depends, I play a lot of 'cozy' games with the sound muted because i have a podcast or other music going, but if its any other type of game I tend to have sound on unless I don't vibe with the OST

Sound is okay but i prefer music to be lower in volume than sounds.

Really dependent on whether the sound is essential or not. If we talking bgm, it varies. If its sound effects during sex scenes, then I feel like it's a necessity.

always turn sounds down to 25% but its always blaring when you first open the game so I get why you would mute it.

muting the sound of the game is the first thing I do when I open it, if there's a good one out there I won't even know about it

If the voice actress is good, that's a huge plus for me. (For example Ravager)

Id rather have some type of sound and music in the back
Though some games just gotta fix the volume of their default music and sound volume
sometimes when I boot up the game for the first time it blasts your damn ears

Imute it all, it's either stock sounds or music that doesn't add much of anything

i only turn sound off if its excessive japenese moaning. music is nice keep headphones on one ear so i dont totally block out the world

it's usually tacked on because everyone does it, rarely is it any good or meaningful
